Considering this site is a site JUST for remotes, I was surprised that Dan didn't add this sooner. My remote of choice is the Marantz RC2000Mk2. I also have a Home Theatre Master SL9000 and played around extensively with the Take Control. Never seen a Pronto here in Canada but played around with the ProntoEdit program.

Anyway, my feeling with remotes is that you generally get what you pay for. For me, the Marantz is the *cheapest* remote that does the job for me. The cheaper ones like the Sony AV2000, SL9000, Rotel, One For All's don't cut it if I had to shelf all my original remotes. The touchscreen ones don't have me convinced either. I can *feel* my way around the RC2000 in the dark. Now that I am used to its button layout, I don't have to look it at while I am using common functions: transport, volume, numeric entry, pause etc. This is something that will never be true with the touchscreens. The ideal remote would be one that has hard keys for most common functions but a programmable area for less used keys. Or even better, imagine a remote with hard keys but the labels on the hard keys are programmable. Whaddya think?

I posted a note on another site (smr-home-theater.org ,forum 1) asking for input on the Pronto vs. the HK/IRIQ. Several responses came back similar to yours - people like to be able to feel buttons in the dark. It's not clear to me anyway whether the LCD touch pad would be as 'satisfying', even if it's backlit. I DO like the idea of up/downloadable templates though. I have'nt decided yet though - don't have enough remotes (only 4) on the coffee table to force the decision.

I got rid of the MkII to get an IRIQ. Hated it. Got a Pronto. Now for the first time ever I have ONE (Count em) one remote on the coffee table.

I got rid of 9 remotes so I'm about as happy as can be.

Also, its been weeks since I've heard "Honey, how do I turn on a movie????"

I have a few of questions about the MK 2. 1)How much memory does the MK 2 have. 2)Does it have the capability to run timed macros. 3)To anybody who owned a MK 2 and switched to another remote, what were the reasons for switching from the MK 2. 4)What is the best price for a MK.2

Answers to DanK

1. Memory? Don't know the exact figure, but it can handle 10 devices. It handled all the keys of my 9 remotes.
2. Timed macros? You can't set a macro to run at a particular time but you can adjust the timing within a macro.
3. To attain an easier to use remote, you have to go to the HarmonKardon TC1000 or Philips Pronto. Most of the people who upgrade to those tend to want that extra bit of configurability or ease of use that a programmable touchscreen with PC software would allow. The only real drawbacks of those remotes is the $$$$ (we're talking almost twice as much as the RC2000Mk2) and the lack of that "hard key" feel for most buttons.
4. I've seen people buy it for about $200 shipped on the web.

I just got allot of gear and I was told that I should get an RC2000 MKII. I don't know much about remotes. I just want it to be simple.
I was also told that when the Marantz 5000 comes out the 2000 will sell allot cheaper. I'm looking for a dealer on the net or a used one. Can anyone help?
