Hello,
After reading many of the discussions about the philips rc 9800i, I'm left with the decision of wheter to order this remote or not. The main use of this remote will be to control my a/v equipment and also my media center pc.

Now, should I get it and try it for a month or so or is there another remote that will replace my other remotes? I'm not very remote control savy but I can get around any minor headaches when it comes to technology.

thanks

Can you give me an exact list of your equipment? And do you use a UpNp media renderer? What is it what you like about this remote? If you answer these questions I can give you an advise.

The a/v equipment consist of:
23 inch flat screen tv.
Toshiba DVD player.
Pioneer receiver
Direct TV box
Media center PC with remote control.

I have a home network at home and I thought by having this remote I would be able to stream my music to any part of the house. the router is a linksys WRTG56. I also building a new house where I'm going to have more a/v equipment in my office and in the cinema room.

I do not use a UpNp media renderer right now but I'm planning to get one once my house is finished.

When I saw the remote on the dell website, the main thing I liked was the size of the screen and the fact that has wifi capabilities and the supposed easiness to set up the remote control. Also the fact that uses infrared and radio technology.

Another main thing I want to do right now is control my direct tv box from my room. I dont have a box in my room to controls the channels so the main box is in the living room so whatever channel I'm watching in the living room, is the same channel I'm watching in my office's computer. I guess I want to avoid the running around from the office to the living room.

Thanks for the help.

First to straight some things up, the remote has no radio technology other than Ethernet. So it is not possible to do "radio control".

If you are a Do-it-your-selfer, on a tight budget and accepting that some things will never work perfectly the remote is the one to choose. However if you can spend some more money and you want things to work flawlessly, than you should not buy this one. All in all, looking to your equipment it should not be a problem to program the remote, but if the system becomes more complicated (as probably in your new house) it is more cumbersome to get things working.

Because you cannot "program" the remote (with software) and therefore not customize you stuck with the user interface of the philips designers. Most of the things have been well thought off, but some things not. And it doesn't look like there will be a firmware update so we have to stick with the user interface.

Best regards,

Thanks for the advice. Seeing that I will be adding additional a/v equipment in my new house, which remote do you recomend that will actually work well with the equipment I have now and the any future equipment?

Also, if I'm in my office and I want to change the channels of my Direct TV satellite box(that is in the living room), will the rc 9800i change the channels with no problems or would I have buy a RF receiver in order to do this?

I'm afraid of recommending something I never used myself (or seen), but you might want to have a look at the NevoSL which has also a forum on this website. It is equipped with WiFi and you can buy a so called NevoLink which communicates over WiFi and sends ir-signals to you Direct TV satellite box(that is in the living room). Be aware that this device is considerably more expensive and can only be ordered by an authorized dealer, which also installs it ($$$). The only feature it lacks is an EPG (electronic program guide) which is a nice asset of the 9800i.

Also, if I'm in my office and I want to change the channels

You will indeed need something like an RF receiver to do this.

Good luck in your quest for the ultimate remote!
