So, the laptop is new, and a client needs some help with an RC5400.* And I can't install Wizz.it on my computer. After a lot of folderol, I try to open the program and I get a message saying there's a registry error.

To add to that, I've got old zip files of Wizz.it up to 1.2.5, but the Files system here doesn't have that...why? It only goes up to 1.1.1. I've been trying to install 1.1.1 and won't mess with 1.2.5 unless one of you tells me it's a good idea.

So, basically, help!

And thanks in advance.

Ernie,

I'm reading your tag line and laughing out loud.

32 or 64 bit OS? Home, Professional, or Ultimate?

When you installed, did you right-click on setup and choose Run As Administrator? Are you running in XP compatibility mode?

Did you research any other threads at all? ;-)

And are you running Windows 7 on 'that laptop'? (couldnt' resist).

I recommend you get the stuff here before you lose the ability to do so.

I'm so uninformed about the differences between versions of Windows software that it didn't occur to me to look it up and tell you.

I have no idea what you mean by "did I right-click and choose Run As Administrator." I unzipped a .exe installation file and double clicked on it. I instantly got a message saying that other files in the folder also needed to be unzipped... so I followed what it said there; no unzip program opened, nothing asked me where I wanted the files; nothing. But I'll look at the information you provided and see if I can work it out.

I researched other threads. I found 80 threads about Windows 7 and the TSU9500, but zero about the RC5400. I got zero responses when I searched this site for
"Windows 7" RC5400
so I figured I'd better start asking questions.

I'm going to go look at the stuff you linked me to, but I thought I downloaded everything from the site that is relevant some time ago. And why do I have a copy of the software, version 1.2.5, when it's not even here on the site?

I don't get it. The site referred to in the link tells me that I should not use the XP emulator after the 8th unless the computer is not connected to the internet.

Does that mean I can put that software on "that laptop" (yes, the one I was talking about in the first post) and not use the software while I'm online; then turn off wifi and use the XP thing; then exit it; turn my wifi back on etc?

I'm going to "get it," which to me means download files that I can install later.  But the wording on the site makes me think I must download and install it, which means that I can't download it once and then copy it to other computers and install it later on them,

You mentioned "double-clicking" on the exe. Right-click on the same EXE and choose Run as Administrator. This is how you install the software such that the installer has Admin rights.

With regards to "being unprotected" and "not recommended".
What it means is that after April 8th, Microsoft will not be providing security updates for Windows XP and they may remove the software in question from their website. They are making such statements to avoid legal issues should a computer become infected or an organization be taken offline because of a proliferating virus due to an unprotected Windows XP.

Here's my advice. You can install and use the Virtual PC but if you ever want to browse the web, be sure that you ONLY do that through Windows 7 so that you have all security patches. I only recommend using the XP Virtual PC for purposes of downloading your Wizz.it config to the remote.

Note that you can edit the config in Windows 7, it is likely only the download for which you will require the Virtual PC and the USB driver. ll this may be a moot point as the RC5400 I don't think has a dedicated driver (like ProntoNG.sys for the TSU7000). That being said, maybe the right-click of the exe and 'Run As Administrator' may be all you need.

If you'd like to discuss offline, ping me @ my yahoo mail addy and maybe I can walk you through it. Will do my best but have not installed the stuff on Win7 (Yet).
