Can we get a forum going of people who understand the Pronto's capabilities who are now using app based remotes. I have a fairly complex system with several locations and 4 rfx6500's located around my home. I do all my own install and troubleshooting. With my pronto's all beginning to age (already lost 2 to failure and child accident) I am looking at see what an android tablet could do. Most interested in knowing if any have the "assignability" that the rfx6500 allows.

The touchsquid software looks promising? What have you used?

You can always use GlobalCache iTaq IR units and get the IR assignablity. Just that you will need a wired network. iRule will use these gateways natively.

I have 2 Android tablets and would like to replace each remote with a tablet. I know that I will need secondary pieces like a iTach on each floor and/or room to translate the codes to IR, so there is that additional cost, plus the time involved in customizing the tablets.

From reading your post, that's not really answering your question. I don't know that you can reuse the RFX units, you would have to find a remote that outputs RF at specifically the frequency of the RFX unit. This is another reason I hadn't changed, I also have an RFX unit. With the WiFi-IR iTach unit, you use your existing WiFi network instead of RF and have the ITach units do the translation instead of the RFX units.

Thanks for the response guys. Even as I opened this the touchsquid info popped up as an ad on the site. I have always loved the complete customization that the pronto line offered and am wondering if anyone out there has any experience with the new apps for android that would offer something similar. I watched one of the CES videos about one that lets you reassign button names and functions but what about button layout, make your own buttons, macros, etc. Anything out there becoming as powerful or as customizable as pronto? It has to be coming but are we there yet?

I am in the same boat as you. I have two TSU7000's (one as a back up) and was considering one of the samsung tab units as they have an IR blaster built in. I thought that was going to be the answer but found out later the Android doesn't have the capability to read codes from the remotes that came with an AV component. I also looked into a few systems that use the home LAN (wifi) but that looked expensive and very difficult to set up. It also sucks that there's no driver support for the 7000 using WIN 7, 64 bit. I am at present using WIN 7 pro and running XP virtual within 7 to use the ProntoEdit NG software. I really like the TSU7000 but at some point will probably have to make a change and I haven't found anything to date that's as easy and as intuitive to program as the Pronto series remotes!!

One really odd thing is that, the tablets should be infinitely customizable.
We should be able to run circles around a "remote" in terms of customization.
However, all of the apps I see look primitive albeit, the primitive setups have very high quality graphics and that's about it...

I would buy another tablet for this use...... but my research is leading to either, very basic operation, unacceptably basic controls, basic displays, and even worse "complexity" with no substantial payoff for investing in the complex setup

Hi, What I did was comb the internet looking for apps and comments/reviews..... I recorded no app names as none of them, once studied, did anyhting "remotely" (haha) like i was interested in..... one biggy was the inability to learn commands..... the tablets/phones do not "receive" IR or RF signals.... another biggy was that they needed a separate convertor box to accept the transmitted wi-fi signal from the tablet and convert that to IR or RF signal.... only a very few have the IR feature built in....

your question leads me to maybe doing an actual writeup

If I don't go with a 96 or 9800 (Philips), I may do the tablet -> Wi-Fi to IR converter route. You can configure the converter to do macros and to do the learning. My biggest issue is with the GUI and it's customizability. Have you found programs that will let you do whatever you want?
