ProntoProEdit NG 2.1.8.0 suddenly won't run when I try to edit my PCF. I'd used it to create the PCF and never had any problems with it until recently. When I try to run it, a window pops up: "ProntoProEdit NG has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I uninstalled it. Ran Norton's WinDoctor to take care of anything it left behind. Redownloaded it from Philips' web site. Install went smoothly, at least no errors popped up. Have desktop icon and Start Menu entry.

Problem is that when I try to run the re-downloaded version, I still get the same error window mentioned above.

I can't even load a PCF.

Other than updating my Dell Dimension 9100 BIOS from A02 to A03 there haven't been any major changes to my system.

I'm running XP Home SP2.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Any Windows Updates run recently? Do you have auto-updates turned on?

Yes, I have auto-update turned on. I had it turned off for a while, but when I manually check for updates, I really didn't understand what all of them did. So, I figured what the heck, I'll turn it on.

Unlike the link you referenced above, I do get the error window popping up.

Microsoft released a USB Human Interface Device (HID) update on Windows Update relecently to correct a problem where some computers with Microsoft Wireless keyboards and mice wouldn't go to sleep or run the screen saver. I think that the TSU3000 and 3500 use a HID driver but I don't know about the TSU7000 and 7500.

Please see this post as Peter seems to think that MSXML6 might be causing an issue. I've provided instructions on how to test to see if this is the case.

I don't have MSXML6 on my system.

I have MSXML4 (in System32, modified Nov 4, 2006) and MSXML5 (Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office 11, modified Sep 7, 2006). But the problem only started recently so I don't think either of those could be the problem.

I do have Net Framework 2.0.

FWIW, I have the latest Windows Defender and Norton Antivirus 2007. Don't know if that'll make any difference or not.

Any further suggestions greatly appreciated!

The above suggestion worked for ProntoEdit Professional. I'm unsure as to what else might have changed.

Problem solved!

Apparently, 2.1.8.0 needs MSXML4.DLL to run.

Based on the preceding posts, I switched to the MSXML5.DLL directory and in the Start Menu Ran "regsvr32 msxml5.dll". Still couldn't run 2.1.8.0.

Then I switched to the MSXML4.DLL directory and ran "regsvr32 msxml4.dll". It worked. I've restarted and turned off my computer a couple times, and it still works.

Somehow, MSXML4.DLL must have gotten turn off.

MSXML4 is installed as part of ProntoEdit. Sounds like it became corrupted in a way that the ProntoEdit install kit thought it was installed.

Had exactly the same irritating problem (also affected Olympus Master camera software). Didn't have MSXML 5 or 6 installed though.

I found an easier fix that worked for me:

- Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

- MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK

- Click here for support information

- Repair

Hope that helps anybody who's tearing their hair out like I was!
