BANG!!
Sorry Chris, I couldn't resist that. I THINK I MAY HAVE A SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM.
We have an iMac DV-SE and bought the Pronto in May of this year. We knew the USB connection was going to be a bit of a pain but didn't realise that it would take this long before cracking the problem of successfully uploading and downloading configurations. We tried Softwindoze 95 using a variety of USB adapters without any success. Now we are running Virtual PC 3.03 with Windoze 98. The problem of the adapter was finally solved when we invested in a Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter which supports data rates up to 230Kbps – twice the speed of the standard PC serial port. At first we couldn’t get it to work, but then I remembered seeing a posting by Cole on this forum back in May. I have reproduced his instructions here, substituting the high speed USB for the twin serial one he used.

Launch Virtual PC. Choose "Preferences" from the Edit menu. Make sure USB is set to "Enabled," but don't select any devices. If there are devices listed don't check them. Select either Com 1 Port or Com 2 Port and click the radio button next to "Mac Serial Port." Under the pop-up menu directly below, you should see "P#XUSA19W" (where "X" is either a 1 or a 2, depending on which USB port on your Mac the Keyspan adapter is connected to). Also check "Non-modem device."

Open the Control Panel folder in Windoze 98. Double-click the "System" icon. Select the "Device Manager" tab at the top of the window. Click on the + sign next to the "Ports (COM & LPT)" item to expand the list. Select (click on once) whichever port you selected in step 3 and click "Properties." Click on the "Port Settings" tab at the top of the window. In the "Bits per second pop-up menu, select 115200. Click OK, then OK again.

Launch ProntoEdit (we are using version 1.05). I have found that it's a good idea to go into setup on the Pronto and extend the "LCD" and "LCD Light" time to about 120 secs – this saves having to keep the Pronto "awake" during upload/download by tapping the screen. Choose "Upload from Pronto" from the File menu in ProntoEdit to verify your connection and sit back in amazement.

I have found this works very well. Contributors to the forum have advised holding down the left and right keys on the Pronto when inserting the cable, but I have found this to be unnecessary. I have also experimented with pushing the cable in both fast and slow. Once or twice it has failed to connect properly the first time, but it usually connects ok the second time.
We bought the Keyspan from www.jigsaw24.com for about £50 and it arrived within 24 hours. Great service. But do make sure you get the High Speed USB adapter, because the ordinary Keyspan USB adapter was not fast enough.

Hope it works for you

Best of luck, Caroline

Hi Caroline,
I went to the Keyspan web page - the high speed USB adapter is listed as a DOS er uh Windows 98 product. I presume this is the unit you are talking about. Price is about right. Is there any software with it? Thanks. HNick

I can't speak to if this solution will work as I don't have a USB-enabled Mac, but your detailed answer does remind me of one step (noted in my original directions at the beginning of this thread) that I had to do to get my setup to work. Perhaps you might try this prior to purchasing a new USB-Serial adapter.

I too couldn't get ProntoEdit to connect to the Pronto with the 'out of the box' Virtual PC settings. Guessing that my emulated Windows environment might be creating some sort of discontinuity between what ProntoEdit and/or Windows 95 was expecting and what my emulated serial port was able to deliver, I tried adjusting the COM port speed downward.

When in Windows, I went thru the same adjustment of the 'Bits per Second' for the Com port as described for the USB adapter setup directions (also detailed in my original instructions at the beginning of this thread), and I lowered my speed from the default of (115K?) down to 2400 and everything worked properly. The next one or two faster port setting may also have worked fine but I wanted to see if a large slow-down would help, and as it solved the problem on my first adjustment, I have never bothered to set the port speed faster as uploads and downloads take only a few seconds now anyways.

Again, this may not apply to your situation at all, but if it is possible that you are having some sort of communications speed mis-match, try changing your Windows speed preferences for the appropriate COM port dramatically faster or slower and see if that helps.

Hang in there! :-)

Hi HNick,
Yep, that’s the baby. And yes, it does come with software to get you up and grinning. Sorry for the delay in replying but I’m on UK time. Just got in from work and saw your message.
Hope the Keyspan works for you. It should do if you follow the instructions on my earlier message. We’ve now downloaded some neat graphics from this site that work brilliantly.

On a G4, there is another way which may work better if you don't need the internal modem. [Link: geethree.com]

This does a better job at emulating a serial port than a USB-serial adapter.

This may not get answered but here goes anyway. I have followed your directions to a t however I have a Dynex USB adapter. Is the Mac adapter mandatory for this to work. I have a Macbook Pro running VM Fusion with Vista installed. I have no problem trading this cable in but I just wanted clarification on this. I've been reading and studying for about a week now and am anxious to connect to my TSU 6000. At this point I'll try anything.

Thanks ahead.

What will be mandatory is that the COM port to which the remote is attached be the FIRST available and unused COM port. That is, if mouse is on COM1, and COM2 is available, remote can be connected there. However, if COM1 is unused and your adapter is configured for COM2, connecting remote there will not work and the adapter should be set for use as COM1.

Many adapters provide advanced driver settings to allow one to specify such a thing. If your adapter does not have this then, I suggest the Keyspan as documented in the FAQ or possibly the use of Tonto from [Link: giantlaser.com].

Lyndel,
I appreciate the reply. I do not use a mouse so both com ports are open. What I ordered now is the Mac interface cable for DC20/25/210. I hope that when I get this I can follow the directions and be successful. That will give me both Kodak cables and I hope that will do it.

Thanks again.

You want the NG forum where you will find info on the 7000 and parallels. I replied to your new thread here on this subject.
