Just bought this Pronto as an upgrade from my black and white version. I was surprsied to find that it connects via a RS232 cable. My vista laptop does not have a serial port, so I have a USB to RS232 cable. I have had to mess to ensure the port is COM1, and the PC recognises the cable ok, but I cannot upload or download to the pronto.

The message I keep getting is, "found COM1 ok, but Pronto is not on or connected". I have tried all variations to get it recognised but I am getting no where. I can only presume the cable is not campatible.

Could anyone provide some advice on what I could try next or recommend a cable that works with vista.

Thanks

Andrew

FAQ? They keyspan adapter is discussed there. Make sure that you also configure for 9600,N,8,1 at the hardware level in case that is needed. I can't recall what handshaking (XON/XOFF maybe).

I appreciate your reply but forgive my ignorance and lack of knowledge. I may have to take your email and problem to my local computer shop, as I really do not have the knowledge or skill to deal with these sort of instructions. I thought there would be an easy answer to this. I have never come across a device that cannot talk to computers with ease.

So a couple of questions.
- Is this just a cable issue - that is the pronto edit just cannot connect to the pronto via the cable adaptor and if I get an older pc (so I do not need to use the adaptor) it will work fine?
- The keyspan adaptor (£24 on Amazon) will definitely work with vista and there are no other cables that also work. Is there no simple phono to usb lead available. - Do you know anything about the Tonto software for Ubuntu. I dual boot with Ubuntu and love it - is Tonto worth considering, does it get past the cable issue.

Thanks for your help - I am really lost and considering staying with the black and white version that seems to come with a more modern pc usb cable.

You talk about upgrading from the black and white model. What are you upgrading from and what are you upgrading to? You mention your B&W model connects with a USB cable? If so, then it is not a Classic Pronto. Hence, I ask the models before we go much further.

Nothing will get past the cabling issue, even Tonto. You need a COM port and Pronto must be on the lowest COM port (Specifically for ProntoEdit - not required for Tonto).

That being said, you are using a remote that was discontinued around 2004 (8 years ago). With regard to your post about connecting devices with ease, try to put a PS/2 mouse onto a laptop these days, especially a laptop without a docking station.

Yes, you can take this post and print as you like. You might also want to print out the Classic Pronto FAQ (see link at bottom of this page) and take that with you to a shop.
