Anyone know where I can purchase a communication cable to go between my Pronto TSU2000 and my PC?

The FAQ is your friend: [Link: remotecentral.com]. Build one or buy the Kodak camera cable.

found the wiring diagram on FAQ, but no indication as to applicability to which models. Does the same cable/wiring work for 6000?

Thanks

Yes, it does.

The same cable applies to all the Classic Pronto Remotes and also includes the Yamaha RAV, Onkyo Chad, Marantz RC5000/5000i/5200/9200.

I am finally getting around to purchasing the Kodack DC210 cable for my Pronto TSU2000. I noticed that my laptop does not have the serial port connection that the cable has. What options do I have? (Obviously my laptop does have USB)

You can buy a serial to USB adapter. I believe that recommended models are:

IOGear GUC232A
Keyspan USA-19HS

However I can't guarantee that. I purchased the IOGear myself to test out in a new system I have without USB.

For a laptop, you might be able to find a serial to ExpressCard or PCMCIA adapter, which would give you a "real" serial port. I started off buying a PCIe serial port card for my new system, but the system *really* didn't like it.

No idea. You can always build one from information in the FAQ or have a friend build it for you.

What's a "harming"?

If you meant a Harmon/Kardon TC-1000, then no, the pins are reversed.

If you meant a "Harmony", then those are all USB and not serial.

If you meant a "Garmin" GPS (since I see some serial cables that look similar to what would be needed), then I don't know. It depends on the pinout - there are two possibilities. The Harman/Kardon TC-1000 and all serial-based URC remotes use one version, and the Pronto used another. The original Pronto came with a 3-conductor cable (plus ground) but it only actually needs 2.

If you meant something else... please clarify.

No...
Why would it? There is no Industry Standard on this.
Use a Multimeter and hack two cables to make up a lead.

Then you need the USB to Serial Convertor.

hiroyui1,

My suspicion is that you don't have a computer with an RS-232 DB9 connection. If this is the case, then you CANNOT use a USB cable. You must resort to either installing a COM Port PCI card or some other way to get reliable 232 or use a USB->232 converter.

All these things are discussed in the FAQ. Please have a look. The Keyspan adapter is the most reliable.

So to jump into this thread here, if you want to program a TSU6000 (which I just got on Ebay) using ProntoEdit you need to either have a computer with a serial port (I have one running windows 98 but I loathe to use it), or I have to buy a $30 dollar USB to Serial adapter and then a $10.00 Pronto to Serial cable.

Not the most elegant solution but this is aging technology.

But here is my followup: What if you just want to wipe the device and load the root default CCF? Right now the one I bought I tried to REVERT.....but it doesn't seem to revert to anything than what is already pre-programmed in the device, I don't get the familiar layout of buttons to choose from. The REVERT function goes through its standard Please Wait... setting....but then it comes back looking...well..like its still custom programmed :(

*EDIT*....this may be a better description: You know the base view you get when you reset a pronto, with all the buttons lined up in two rows for you to begin to choose and program? I don't get any of that. In fact, I cannot add devices. The option to "ADD DEVICE" is always greyed out. All I get is RESTORE Device or COPY EXISTING Device.

I've ordered the $10 serial cable, I'll try installing pronto edit on my aging Win98 box and see if I can download the configuration and correct for it that way. Ah well, I knew I should have looked harder at the add...no wonder it was only $80 and not $120+ like the sellers other offerings (with cables!). Live and Learn.

There is tons of stuff in the FAQ. There's also a PDF version of the FAQ that is suitable for printing. If you are getting back into Pronto, you might want to print it for future reference.

If it is not a laptop, why not just buy a PCI COM port card and stick it in the machine?

Note that when you buy that USB to Serial Adapter, please be advised that you need one that has device drivers that let you configure the COM port to the lowest and first available one as described in the FAQ B3-04 here.

The reason you cannot add device is that the config in the remote contains no devices which are marked as 'Template' devices. A search for Template Devices will surface this thread. I could not find anything in the FAQ other that the '+' symbol in front of a device.

With regard to the 'Revert' option, you can find likely out plenty by either a search for Revert or referring to the FAQ A4-03.
