New TV (Panny G20), so I now need to edit my device (RU-940) for the first time in a while.

First problem I have is in selecting an input for the screen as I use it purely as a monitor for my AV amp.

On the TV remote I would do this by selecting "Input" - scroll button - select.

The issue is that the starting position for the scroll position is always the source currently being watched, so the number of scroll pushes for each source changes dependant upon what you are currently watching.

I have a similar issue switching between FreeSat & FreeView (the set has both tuners).

On my old CRT it was easy to get round this as you could allocate each input source to a channel number, then use that number to select the source. Can't see that facility on the Panasonic unfortunately.

You need to use what is called Discrete Codes. This PDF file contains Discrete Hex Codes for Panasonic TV's.

I don't know if there are Discrete's available for FreeSat & FreeView.

many thanks for that, not been down the discrete code road before, but I'll give it a go tonight.

As for the FreeSat/Freeview... I need to have a think about that if no discretes are available. Might be some way round it its an either/or rather than having to select from a list of several.

If you used it purely as a monitor, then all audio and video would go through the AV amp and ONE video output would go to the TV. Thus no problem.

But if you're using the AV amp as an audio amp and using the TV as a video selector/monitor, then I see your problem.


The classic solution to this before discretes existed was to hit channel up, which would always take you to the TV tuner. From there it was always some number of pushes to each other input.

That's what we had before discrete codes.

A few years ago someone -- I firmly believe it was a junior engineer who did not understand why TVs were built the way they were -- at Samsung created a situation where channel up, when on a video input, did not switch to the TV tuner, but instead yielded the message "that function is not available."

On my old Hitachi RPTV, I'd do Channel+ followed by Channel- which would switch me to the Tuner on whatever the last channel I was watching (this is called "finding an anchor") and then I would issue 'Input' to move through the various inputs.

sorry you're right, I'm not using it purely as a monitor, but you've got a proper understanding of my problem. Its switching between my TV tuners.

I need to find an "anchor" but I'm having no luck at present. Its driving me buts.

We installers sometimes get accused of sitting wasting time while programming. What we are doing (if not actually wasting time) is trying out all sorts of combinations of button pushes to see whether there's some one or two push situation that always gives the same results, no matter where you start.

I've seen sets with two tuners where, when you're on a video input, channel up takes you back to the last tuner you were on. that would not be helpful. But if it takes you to one particular tuner, always, that would.

Sit and play. Try silly combinations of things. When you expect to go to an analog tuner, enter something like 36 POINT 4. Maybe the tuner is smart enough that when it receives a "point," that is, decimal point, command, it switches to the digital tuner. That's probably not going to help you, but it shows the kind of wildass thinking you have to do to find solutions.
