I just overhauled my home theater. I've had my pronto TS1000 for like 10 years. Since the last time I had to change my config, I bought a new home pc. So now I no longer have a a serial port or an xp (or lower) pc upon which to program this bugger. I have tried and tried with two usb-serial adapters, using two different chips (including the Prolific 2303 which supposedly works). I've tried pronto and tonto. I'm at a loss.

I actually bought a Harmony, thinking "oh, this'll do." It will not do. I am a tweaker, and it was so hard to adjust the center channel, or tweak the color etc. And it had a heck of a time changing the inputs on my projector.

So, I'm at my wits end here. I would buy a new pronto with USB support in a heartbeat if they weren't 8 billion dollars. Is there anyone out there able to get there pronto to connect to a usb-only vista system? And if not, what are my options. It's crazy because the technology behind the pronto is dead cheap now. Why do these remotes still need to cost hundreds? (don't answer that - it's a supply/demand issue)

That's like 8 questions in one, but I'm at my wits end

Thanks!
Mike

Mike,
I'm new here also and I gotta tell you, there is tons of information on these forums. I would make sure to check the FAQ section for possible help. I gave a TSU6000 with a Mac Laptop. What a strange combination. I've been working on getting my two devices on speaking terms also. Take a look around here and see what you can find. If I can help let me know.

Good luck.

Mike,

If your PC is a desktop model, try one of these [Link: newegg.com]. I use it on Vista (or Windows 7) 64-bit and it works fine. Also cheaper than a USB adaptor.

If you're using a laptop, the Keyspan adaptor seems to be the only one that works.

MY PC doesn't have a free PCI slot, so I guess I'll go with the keyspan adapter - I'll search the forum to get the right number. Is there confirmation that the keyspan works with vista?

Finally, I never saw this when I searched the forums and FAQs but are there any recommended settings for the COM port (baud, parity bits, etc)?

Thanks!
Mike

First unused COM port (required for first unused). Search for recent post by me about COM2 being the one if COM1 is in use but if COM1 is free, then you must config adapter as COM1. Edit - Here's the link:

I found out the hard way that not every cable works with the Pronto remotes. Does the same thing hold true for Expresscard Serial adapters?

Can't make any guarantees, but if the card emulates Com 1, 2, 3 and 4 and supports your operating system, there shouldn't be a problem.

Not likely. I would expect that the only issue you will have with the PCI adapters will be the same as with an onboard COM port. The ordering of the COM ports is critical such that the remote be connected to the FIRST available COM port.

Thanks for the answers. I ordered a Syba serial port expresscard which will be here tomorrow - we'll see how well it works with ProntoEdit and Windows 7 Ultimate RTM (sometimes it's nice to have a Technet subscription!)

The Syba serial port card worked like a champ. Windows 7 x64 installed the necessary drivers, I selected COM1, rebooted (COM1 was in use already), and ProntoEdit communicated to my TSU2000 without any problems. For $20, it's a great alternative to using a USB to DB9 cable.

I just installed Windows 7 on a netbook with Pronto Edit 4. The Keyspan USA-19QW USB to Serial adapter I normally use worked with XP doesn't work with Windows 7. I also have a CoolGear USBG-232 USB to Serial adapter which has a Vista driver. It works well with Windows 7 and Pronto Edit 4 (Just be sure to reboot after installation of adapter software and/or Pronto Edit 4).

I could use the driver if you can refer me to it. I have the Keyspan USA-HS19 but do not have the install disk or instructions. At keyspan the instructions are for MAC only. Will I need the disk and/or instructions?

The XP-Vista driver (It says Windows Driver, not Win98SE, etc) is available here directly from the Tripp Lite site:
