FYI

I found an old ATEN UC232A USB to Serial adaptor in a drawer, let XP find drivers, reset the unit to use COM1 as described above and it works fine. So the ATEN product seems to work. It is at least 8 years old, but it is still listed on their site as a current product. This was with an old TS1000.

I never was able to get it to work with mine. It would start to download the config but would bomb out about 30% through. Never did get a successful download from the remote to the PC.

Moved to an old PC with a serial port and it worked great!

You probably need a better cable. Most of the low-cost cables has a processor chip from a company called Prolific, these chips often have drivers which are incompatible with Windows Vista and 7. I recommend a USB to Serial adapter with a FTDI chipset, which is a more expensive processor and is compatible with all versions of Windows. Very easy to work with, and well worth the extra money.
