I've recently bought a RAV2000 remote on eBay, knowing that it is a very old model, but then, so is all my Yamaha hifi, and it all works really well. I downloaded RavEdit from the Yamaha site but, when I try to run the installer, I get an error saying it isn't compatible with my version of Windows (Vista x64). It looks like it is a 16-bit application. Is it really that old?

Do I need to use RavEdit or would it be safe to use some other editors that I can install? Suggestions as to suitable editors are most welcome.

Alternatively, does anybody have RavEdit running and, if so, how?

You just need to set the RAVEdit install kit to Windows XP SP2 Compatibility mode, then install it.

Nope. Tried that, and everything back to Windows98. I think these will only install 32-bit apps and I think RavEdit is a 16-bit app. I could, I suppose, install VirtualPC, then Windows98, then RavEdit but, frankly, I can't be bothered. So a current alternative is sought.

All Pronto software is 32 bit.


ProntoEdit runs on Vista, so RAVEdit should also run.

Interesting. I downloaded RAVedit1_0.exe from this site, and it's not the same as RAVeditSetup1_0.exe as on Yamaha's site. The one on this site is far more helpful in that it actually displays an error message that says "Unsupported 16-bit Application. The program ...setup.exe cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available." It may be that the editor itself id 32-bit but the installer is 16-bit.

But as you said, ProntoEdit runs fine. Is there any reason I can't use ProntoEdit?

The problem is ProntoEdit won't download files to the Yamaha's firmware version.

There are many applications that are "mostly" 32-bit, but still have 16-bit components... which continues to cause trouble with Vista.

I just noticed that you were trying to run it on 64 bit Windows. That's the problem. It runs fine on 32 bit.

I got the RAV2000 to work with ProntoEdit 4.0.5 software on Windows 7 64 bit. Some of the outer remote button are labeled differently in the software, but just config those buttons in the software by same location on the remote.

Yamaha won't update the software - I opened a ticket and their response was that the product was out of support.

I would expect as much. The software and remote is almost 10 years old.

As Stoobie said earlier, Tonto will work: [Link: giantlaser.com]. Download the Windows.exe version. I'm currently running Tonto on a Windows 7 64 bit machine and it's fine. It does complain about a different "colorspace" than windows - but it works anyway.

Oh yeah, it does support the RAV2000 or RAV2000z file types.

I did get ProntoEdit to work with the RAV2000. I also installed Microsofts Windows XP Virtual PC mode on my Win 7 Pro 64 bit PC. Allows you to run XP in virtual mode and allows RAVEdit to install.

Too bad Pronto is moving away from programmable remotes. I really like the customization possible with these Pronto's.
