I am not very experienced with these remotes. I have to be doing something wrong.

Customer changed from cable to sat. and I need to reprogram the # and guide, info etc buttons.

So I go the page choose the button,
choose "set IR"
choose "learn IR"
Then hit the button on the original remote when I am prompted to.

The program (2.3.1) beeps, then hangs up.

I must be doing something stupid? I even added a page, added new buttons and tried to learn IR, but hang up city!

What am I doing wrong?

Often (but not always) trying to learn codes through the computer (software) results in problems (unreliable/dirty codes), due to timing issues. The "best" approach is to learn on the remote, and then upload to the computer for backup purposes.

Thanks Jim,

How do I learn from this remote w/out the computer. On the Pronto I press and hold the remote icon and then learn from there. I forget how you learn via this way on the RC 5000

Never had a 5000, but I believe you press and hold (3 sec) where the mode menu is (bottom center of screen). Then, from setup, you can turn this menu on. Learning can then be selected from the mode menu. If I got this wrong, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me ;-)

Jim is right, except you might have to press and hold at the top of the screen, as you do on the Pronto. I have not seen a 5000 for so long; all I remember is the Pronto TS1000, which is so similar but slightly different that you might get into trouble following Pronto info.

The foolproof routine is to learn all the commands directly to the remote, upload to the computer, modify pages and artwork as necessary, download to the remote when more needs to be learned, learn it, upload it, modify as necessary, et cetera. Clumsy but error-proof.

You have program version 2.3.1? I have Touch Screen Setup 2.0.4, and I just downloaded the latest version (I thought) from the files section of this site, and it turned out to also be 2.0.4. Where did you get 2.3.1, or is it not a Marantz program? That could also be your problem, in fact could break your remote!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie,

2.3.1 is RC Setup, an older version of the software made for the 5000, prior to the 5200/9200 coming out. It should work just fine as long as he doen't want to program the later model legacy remotes.
