New at using Touch Screen Setup . I have been using my RC9200 for controling my equipment with all learned codes for the last couple years . Never had time to really get in to it . I have now purchased another RC9200 for upstairs and now intend to make time to check it out and to have some fun playing around . From past mistakes I wanted to upload my current CCF files to my PC for back up , never can back up to much !! I get an error near completion of the upload that states File is not a Valid RC9200 Configuration . Well not much goes smooth for me . I should have known !! Does anyone have a work around like being able to upload one device at a time or know why I can't upload my current files ? Is there some sort of error on my RC9200 that is preventing the upload ? I'm using Windows XP Pro ,Touch Screen 2.0.4 and have the latest firmware loaded . Thanks in advance for any help !!

There could be several problems, worst would be a corrupted ccf. I've seen this on mine once, it would download (with an error message), and would work on the remote just fine. But, it would not upload. No solution to this one, except repairing the file on the computer and downloading to the remote again.

There is known bug with the Pronto 6000/ Marantz 9200 when ccf's are large. Mine has about 38% free memory, it'll upload fine, but it won't download back to the computer. It hangs about halfway through the process. No workaround for this either, unless you saved the original configuration on the computer. How much free mem does yours have?

Other approachs that might work would be to try uninstalling/reinstalling TSS (remember to reboot before opening the program), or try to download using Tonto (available here: [Link: giantlaser.com]) it's better at communication than TSS.

Based on your description, it really sounds like paragraph 1, above.

Thanks for the help Jim !!

Well memory isn't likely the problem. I still have 83 % free. Not any real custom set up. Just a lot of control codes. I already tried a reinstall and restart with no success either.

Since most of my codes were learned instead of programmed and I have 11 pieces of equipment on it, it would not be hard to get 1 corrupted ccf. code in there I guess. I just wanted to save some work. I studied all the equipment’s original remotes and set up the controls with all the features I wanted, but know is the time to go back in and make the panels more flexible and attractive as well as more organized.

Being someone with 3,381 posts perhaps I can ask you how you would tackle this project. Since I now have two RC9200 would you start with new custom layouts for buttons and transfer control codes to them in better layouts and them upload them one by one till I find the bad code . Or just start from scratch and redo everything. What would be the best way to create a downloadable back up on TSS that is reliable?

Or with my beginning back ground would it be better to just toss the TSS and learn how to use Tonto. Just looking for some direction to minimize my going the wrong way.

Thanks for the Help!!

Well, I guess I'd try Tonto as suggested in paragraph 3. It may work, since it's not concerned with a valid 9200 configuration. Tonto handles all Marantz and Pronto models.

If that doesn't work, there may be a way to upload a ccf from the remote using Windows hyperterminal. The FAQ covers downloading using this program, but I've never tried to upload, and am not sure of what commands to use. Maybe someone else will chime in. In any event, I'd try Tonto first.

When I said the ccf might be corrupted, this has nothing to do with codes. There are things such as embedding buttons on a frame (or something like that, been a long time since I've seen it) that will corrupt a ccf. Happened to me once, had to back off every programming step I took to find it, took forever.

Bottom line, if the ccf is corrupted it would probably be more trouble to find the problem than reprogram. BUT, if Tonto will download the ccf (i.e Tonto doesn't see your ccf as a problem), you could just use Tonto as your programming software instead of TSS. It is a very similar program.

To save a copy of your ccf, just choose "save as" under files in the toolbar and give it a name, standard windows procedure, just like a word processer. Oh yeah, not to be a smart ass, but it's also a good idea to your ccf from the computer to a CDR or floppy disk as well.

EDIT: Concerning your question on design. The "best" design practice is to make code pages. In your DVD device add an extra page (or 2 if required) populated with plain simple buttons just large enough for the appropriate label. Learn all DVD codes to these buttons and then "alias" to these buttons on the regular buttons in your ccf whenever you need these codes. Pages don't need to be pretty, they'll never be seen on the remote except when you learn to the buttons. In fact, "hide" (select "is hidden") these pages using TSS or Tonto. Do this after the learning process, otherwise you won't be able to navigate to them unless you unhide them. Repeat this process for every device you have.

The advantage is you only need to learn each code one time. Makes trouble shooting easier, if a code doesn't work, you know where to find it. If you upgrade gear, just relearn the new codes over the old - minimal time and effort. Finally, if you ever decide to use the RF capabilities of the remote, all you need do is set the appropriate device to RF instead of IR. Other methods would require insuring that all codes you want sent as RF are located in a device set to RF, not the aliases, the actual codes. In other words it would require a lot of reprogramming to reconfigure to RF. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the large CCF problem to me.

Peter,

I kinda thought so as well initially. But, IIRC, "not a Valid RC9200 Configuration" isn't the error message you receive under those circumstances. Additionally, 83% free memory shouldn't be too large a ccf. I suppose it doesn't really matter much (without a copy on his computer), if he can upload eventually he could live with the problem, if not he'll have to start over.

Taking part in a discussion on Remote.com is way more fun then just paging through threads.

Thanks to everyone who has read about my upload problem and has any advice to offer. It looks like the best way to go is to just start over and learn how to do everything I accomplished before with TSS instead of manual configuration from similar product types. At least I will get a downloadable file I can improve as I go and then down load it to my second remote also. I downloaded the programming manual for the RC5000 today and printed it out for easy reading. This is just a little sooner then I wanted. Basic controls are fine for my taste.

If anyone has any other information on my error code during attempted upload (File is not a Valid RC9200 Configuration). I would love to hear about. Also if it helps ,this error occurs at the very end of the upload after all the bars are filled in and it appears the process is finalizing.

Thanks Again for the Input!!

Try upload in Tonto, then open and resave to new file with TSS. Then, download new file and attempt to upload.

I'm wondering if there are some unsupported operations added at one time by Tonto that TSS does not like during upload. That's why I suggest using Tonto to get to the file. Then, opening with TSS which will strip out things like Timers and Beeps that may be present.

I would like to thank Lyndel and Kentman for offering addional information for my upload problem using TSS. Being a home owner I have little spare time so I just got around to fooling around with the work around offered by Lyndel about uploading with Tonto and transferring the file to TSS. To my surprise the upload with Tonto worked great and I was able to download the ccf. files no problem to my second remote. However, I still can not get TSS to open up the file uploaded with Tonto. I now get an error message that reads “File is not a valid RC9200 configuration”. Hard to believe since it was created by and works in an RC9200. Well at least I have a back up on my second remote and I can now start from scratch with TSS. I must have some bad information in my existing files that TSS just does not like. Well I wanted to learn about custom screens and with all I’ve learned at remote central, now is my chance. Thanks !!

Scott
