I have learned the IR codes for 20-30 devices into my Pronto TS1000 over the years, and this is the first piece of equipment I have had problems with. I just purchased a component video switch model #SW104HD ([Link: cable-electronics.com]). Aftrer not finding any reference to the SW104HD in any of the forums I tried to learn the 5 buttons of the SW104HD. After learning each of the buttons using ProntoEdit4, the power button works, but the 4 buttons to switch from input 1-4 do not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also... is there any way to determine if there is a discreet on and off by looking at the 'learned' power button?

Those learned signals are really bad. The Power one has enough correct that I can see what it is and apparently the device can also. The others are hopeless, even given knowledge from the power command that could fill in most of the missing detail of the other commands.

It is possible that you could get garbage learns like that just as a result of weak batteries in the original remote. More likely something else was also wrong, but weak batteries might be contributing to the mess. So start by getting new batteries for the SW104HD remote. (Even if the original remote still perfectly operates the original device, that does not mean its batteries are good enough for a learning remote to learn from it).

The bad signals look like the result of interference from some other IR source. Do you have any sort of RF to IR system or other form of IR repeater or other IR source in the room where you did that learning? Maybe you need to relearn the signals in a different room.

You also may get some of the problems in those signals by jerking one remote or the other at the moment you press the button. It is best to place both remotes properly aimed and on a firm surface so you can hold the original remote still as you press its button and nothing is moving the Pronto at all at that moment.

Your results also hint that the distance between the two remotes was wrong during learning. I don't know much about the best distance for learning for a Pronto, but it may vary depending on the original remote.

I don't think anything is strange or difficult about the the IR protocol used by your SW104HD remote. I think the whole mess is some combination of the factors I described above.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try changing the batteries and relearning the codes in a different room. Come to think of it, there is a USBUIRT in the room I was trying to learn the codes in. I bet that's the problem!

Any advice on checking for a discreet on/ discreet off?

Best guess, there are no discrete On or Off.
You could use MakeHex and IrPanels to generate all 256 possible commands for this protocol and device number (once some better learns confirm that it really is what it appears to be) and test each to see what it does.

The power command decodes as NEC1 protocol, device 2, function 17.

The bad learns look like irregularly paced NEC1 repeat bursts. A LOT of them.

In addition to what John mentioned, make sure to press the LEARN button in the Pronto software well in advance of pressing the actual button to be learned on the original remote. It looks to me like both were pressed at the same time and the Pronto only saw the end of the signal.

Keep the distance between remotes to about 4-5 inches. The Pronto classic models are usually pretty forgiving about slight movement of the original remote as well as angle. But putting them down on a table is obviously the best bet.

I should have noticed that. You're right and it's a bigger factor in the problem than anything I mentioned, though I still think the problem is a combination of causes.

Do you want to quantify "well in advance". I expect you only mean a second or two. But I don't have a Pronto, so I don't know those details of the learning process.

In all the non Pronto learning remotes I've used you need to press the button on the learning remote first and the transmitting remote second, but you don't need any real pause in between. The 1/4 second to 1/2 second that it naturally takes (to get your fingure to the other button) is plenty.

By "well in advance" I meant merely 1/2 to 1 second. Enough time that the ProntoEdit software pops up its dialog saying "Waiting to Learn" before making the move to press the button on the originating remote.

But having learned 20 previous devices as mentioned in the first post, I wouldn't have thought this to be an issue. Making sure the batteries are fresh in both units is always a really good idea.

I've put my TSU2000 through a pretty rigorous duty cycle for learning and I've never seen this issue with any NEC signals following a 4-5" guideline and letting the software get up to speed before sending the signal.

Well... I ran home for lunch, popped fresh batteries into the video switcher remote and relearned the ir with both remotes on a flat surface 4 inches apart in a room without any (known) ir interference.

Now the power button does not work, but the input 1 button is recognized.

Bruno, I have been hitting the button to be learned on the remote fairly quickly after clicking the 'learn ir' button in ProntoEdit. Maybe that is the problem.

Questions:
Should I hold down the button to be learned or just tap it?
Is there anything else you ir gurus can tell me from looking at the working input 1 HEX?

Now it's even clearer that you're pressing the original remote key before the Pronto has really started to learn. On Input 2, you pressed too early by less than a twentieth of a second. On others we can't tell how much too early you were, but I suspect not much.

Anyway, we now know enough you may not need to get the learning right.

Input 1, is also NEC1 protocol, device 2. The timing is a tiny bit off from the usual for NEC1 protocol, but I don't think that is enough to matter at all.

We now have the function numbers of three different commands:

Power = 17
Input 1 = 13
Input 2 = 9

I just ran my MakeHex program and I am pasting clean Pronto Hex for commands 0 to 19 below. Make sure I'm correct in what I've said so far, by testing that commands 17, 13 and 9 work as expected. You may want to test some of the others 0 through 20. I think all the commands are probably clustered in those low numbers. Or you may want to get MakeHex and test all 256 commands.

Nelson, try this... As a learning experiment (for you not the remote :)

Press the Learn button in ProntoEdit. But don't do anything else. Just wait. See how long it takes for the "Waiting" dialog to appear and see how long it takes for the Pronto to pop up a new dialog with a "Learn Failed" error.

Basically that's how much time you have to start sending IR to the Pronto. As long as you start within that window you should be good.

Generally with the Pronto I find that you should not try learning with a very sharp (fast) tap. Just give the button a good (normal) press or a long press. Long pressing works fine if the Pronto recognises the repeat patterns of your signal, otherwise it creates a super-long signal that you don't want. The goal is to have the Pronto capture the appropriate one-time and repeat portions of the signal - and strip down/off extra repeats.

I think with NEC it should work with a long press - the Pronto should strip down the extra repeats.

John posted clean signals which you can work with. You hsould still try the learning, if only to confirm it works properly and so you can use the methods in the future with other remotes.

In any case, learns that are not perfect, but "good enough," will still allow you to decode them and get the exact function/command numbers so you know what to do with your makehex output.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up using MakeHex and IrPanels to generate all 256 possible commands and now I'm using 'clean' codes with no problems. I'll post a ccf for this device to help anyone who gets a SW104HD. MakHex is a great little app John!

I purchased a similar unit and found NO discrete on/off codes so I just leave the darned thing ON.

Did you try using the Tonto software to learn the codes.
It allows multiple "learns" and will wait until it has matching codes from more than one learn.
