press press - turns lights off
press press/hold dims lights down keep holding and it lights them up again

anyone here got any idea whats happening and how to fix it. i've pulled off a few more codes from here and will try them but its starting to get really annoying

The only possible difference might the the hole (if required) for the light sensor. Should you need it, you should be able to chisel it out with an X-acto knife or small drill bit.

FYI, if the damaged remote is a Marantz, then I'd suggest fixing the Marantz as you can do multiple jumps and animation on this remote versus on the Pronto's as you have 'Scroll Backward/Forward'. Using the Marantz, you'll give up Beeps and Timers but many folks don't use those anyway.

the damaged remote is a marantz. the problem is, i am lead to believe, is that the contrast button doesn't work, therefore as i'm sure you are aware, the screen is blank. cant think of anythig else it could be unless the back light or the screen are broken.

any ideas on how to fix any of these problems or to test it to find out exactly whats wrong?

Take both remotes apart and swap the screen first. Then, if you are a skilled with a soldering iron, I'd suggest swapping the wheels between the remote.
