So, I just recently purchased a used ProntoNEO and realized too late that there was no serial cable included. Judging from the connection on the remote itself it appears to be a unique serial cable for the Pronto.

Does anyone know where you can either purchase a suitable cable or how to create one from a standard serial cable and whatever connector is needed for the Pronto end of things. I'm totally bummed not to be able to do some customization! Help!

Thanks a lot.

Alrighty then ... since no one is replying but 15 people have viewed this post I'll go ahead and report what I found out, that supposedly the serial cable included with Tivo boxes will work with Prontos.

I have one of these cables but still need to obtain a female/female adapter to connect it to my computer. Once I have done that I will reply again and let any interested parties know whether it worked.

I've found an old picture of a cable layout:

you need:
1 Sub-D9 Female connector
1 Jack Stereo Ø2,5mm

if you number the D9 as follows:

5 4 3 2 1
9 8 7 6

And if you call the layout of the Jack as follows:

/ \ = A
| = B
| = C

You need to connect:
2 with A
3 with B
5 with C

Hmmm ... I might try that but I'm a little worried. I tried the Tivo cable and it did not work and when I looked at the picture in the ProntoNEO manual it showed the serial cable with a 4 pole mini-jack, not a 3 pole jack like the one you're describing and what the Tivo cable had.

So to appropriate your diagram, there would need to be 4 connections like so

/ \ = A
| = B
| = C
| = D

I think the diagram in the link below (the top pin layout) is probably what is needed but I'm not sure. Speaking of whcih, can anyone who has the actual serial cable take a look and see how many poles the mini-jack end has. A 3 pole jack will have 2 black rings creating 3 independent contact areas while a 4 pole jack will have 3 black rings creating 4 independent contact areas. Thanks.

hmm I have an SBRU930 (european ProntoNeo) and it has only a 3 pole jack. As far as i know the ProntoNeo and SBRU930 are identical in layout; only the european sends it signals at a different frequency.

Thanks for the reply, it would be nice if a US owner could chime in to confirm whether the jack is 3 or 4 pole but I am beginning to believe that you might be correct in assuming the US ProntoNEO is 3 pole as well and even if not, from the diagrams I've seen the 4th pole would just be a second ground connected to the same DB9 pin so I don't even know if it would matter.

I think the next step might be trying a USB-serial adapter and then possibly ... crying? I'm beginning to worry that the serial connection on the Pronto itself might be busted.

This thread is kind of old, so I'm not sure if you have solved the problem or not. I ran into the same problem when I bought the remote 2nd hand for 10 bucks. Thinking I was getting a great deal, I ran home to program it and realized that I couldn't connect to the computer. Philips sells one through their website for $15 plus shipping. (2 or 3 more bucks) I received it in about 2 business days.

Thanks for that! I felt I had to register to post about how accurate your description was. I've had a 9 Pin Din to 3 pole 3.5mm lying about from an old Canon digital camera but didn't want to plug it in incase of damage. After using a multimeter to check that the pin assignments were the same (some sort of agreed standard perhaps?) I couldn't be happier! Now for some sever customisation lol
(Remember boys and girls, never plug cables into your preciouse equipment without making sure the won't make a loud bang!)

Thanks again Gert-Jan

Yes.. 2,3 and 5 are the typical pins used DB9.

you will need to get a USB to serial convert loads on line but not all of them work well the ATEN 232 works with pronto., then plug in the serial to mini jack lead.
Pronto still one of the best Wi-Fi Remotes,

I am just here for the same info
Just been given a Neo and a TSU3000, with Honeywell Avionics label.
Used to have a RU970. Going to see if I can get these fired up
No cradle for the TSU 3000, hope the USB looking plug can be used for that...
