Just want to chime in. If you use variables to convert a toggle command to behave in theory like discrete commands, you need to also program a help page to re sync the system when necessary.

You save lots of time by always specifying components with discrete commands.

My recommendation is to limit variable use to elegant shortening of macros as does dualtriamp, this type of variable use does not require the additional work of creating a help page.

With cable and satellite TOADS, Dale is correct. There isn't any real purpose in turning them off, they still consume the same amount of power.

The upcoming MRF-400 is the correct solution for tracking power status, since it includes sensor ports that can detect when a component is on or off, then issue the toggle power command when necessary.

So does this mean Beta testing has already happened? or shipping them will be for Beta testing?

As far as I know the power + numeric was released as part of a software & firmware upgrade for both SARA and Pioneer software. Check with your cable company... I had to exchange my box (no charge with Cablevision NY) to get the most updated version which also fixed some HDMI HDCP handshake issues.


Do you have any components plugged into the AC on the SA box? If so that device may be triggering the SA's power.


Not a big deal by any means until your wife calls you in the middle of a meeting to tell you that your brand new HDTV must be broken because the audio is coming through your surrounds but there's no picture. My heart skips a beat until I can take a deep breath and tell her to toggle the TV power.


Tivos are designed to be kept on 24/7... SARA boxes are not. The software & guide downloads are not as sophisticated and most can only be received while the box is off. The SA is also notorious for running very, very hot so if you keep it on all the time you are exposing the drive to very difficul conditions.

I'm a newbie that owns an 8300HD and I'm picking up my MX-900 at the store tomorrow. My 8300 does have the "power and numeric" option available, but I don't know what this means or how it helps me work around the power toggle. Could someone elaborate a liittle bit on this.

Power on the 8300HD

Press Setttings button twice on remote

Scroll up a few until you see PowerOn and set it to "Power and Numeric"

Press Setttings twice to get out of menu

Turn cable box OFF

Press any digit, i.e. 0 (zero)

Your box is now on via a digit command instead of a power command.

Programming is as follows for your mx remote:

Cable box ON macro = 0, .5 sec delay, Exit

Cable box OFF macro = 0, .5 sec delay, Exit, .5 sec delay, Power

You now have commands that mimic a true discrete.

Sorry 'bout that, I was thinking that "numeric" referred to a HEX code or something. Thanx for the quick reply.

I have created the cable box on & off macros and assigned them to buttons on page 3. However, I can't seem to get the macros to run during my power on macro. Should there be a "macro icon" in the Macros & Favorites window (Step column) indicating that it will run a macro? There are icons indicating that the command will be sent for the devices that have a discrete code and the command to go to the Cable page so I thought there should be one for the P-ON macro I created for the cable box.
