Does anybody know how to cure an MX-850 remote that has a sticky back?

I called URC and the tech said he never heard of such a thing. I know I've seen MX-500s and some other plastic remotes that got sticky but don't know how to fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few months ago i cleaned two of our sticky MX-500s. They had accumulated a sort of dull thin gummy sticky film on the housing even though they're in a clean smoke-free environment and our hands are always clean. My new-in-box units are still clean.

Anyway i gathered two thin Pep Boys microfiber cloths, then i sprayed part of one cloth lightly with Fantastic spray cleaner (not enough to leave liquid on the remote) then i carefully scrubbed the whole casing then on and around all the buttons (using my fingernail on the cloth), moving to clean areas of the cloth as the previous area picked up the gunk. I had to go over it a few times but i took my time, but i got it squeaky clean leaving it smooth and shiny.

Then i sprayed the 2nd cloth lightly with distilled water and went over the whole remote again to remove any leftover soap film then buffed it clean with the dry part of the cloth. These things actually look like new again so it was worth the effort. Wifey thought i bought her a new MX-500 :-)

This is a common problem with the grippy paint that URC used on earlier units... it kind of degrades over time (like how some soft rubbers/plastics self-dissolve), even without use (I have unused Sidekicks that are gummy). However, it mainly affected the bluish color used on MX-500 and MX-700 units, and I haven't seen anything like that happen on my MX-850 which is still perfectly fine.

So, if it's just accumulated grime, wash it with a wet cloth (and if you need more, try the advice given by the previous poster). If that doesn't do it and the issue is with the actual paint, then the only real cure is to try to peel the paint off. You'll lose the tacky texture, but at this point, that may be preferable.
