Hello all,

I hope you can guide me a bit.

BACKGROUND:

1. I found a great deal on a Harmony 670 Remote and looked on the web to be sure that it would be able to control all of my devices, especially my Sony DVD Changer. All the devices claimed to be fully supported. I we enthusiastic. I bought the remote.

2. I went though the setup and added all the devices. All found and all understood. I was happy.

3. Then I setup the activities, and it just had power-on and play for the "Play a DVD" sequence. I was suspicious.

4. I tried it. It didn't work. It just turned on the DVD, which started playing the highest numbered DVD. I was annoyed, but optimistic.

5. So I went online to research a bit. I've looked through these forums and the ones at logitech. I have have learned a bit.

6. I learned from here that you can use the "media" button on the Harmony to have it browse a list of DVDs and play one on my "Sony DVP-CX995V" 400 DVD Changer. I was excited.

7. I learned how to format the .csv file and uploaded a list of titles to the Harmony software. I was smug.

8. I've learned from here that I can setup the device to "chose the dvd by number" by programming "Display" and "DirectionRight" before selection and "Select", "Display", and "Display" after the selection. And I learned how to do this in the setup tool. I was confident.

9. Then I couldn't find the "select" key in the commands list. I was concerned, but not daunted; I simply substituted "Enter".

10. Then I tried it, and it didn't work either. The Sony just started playing the highest number disk. I was dismayed.

11. Then I learned that my Harmony 670 doesn't have a "Media" Button and is one of only a few Harmony Remotes that don't list DVD titles. I was sad. ( See the forum post by EricHarmony from Logitech:
[Link: forums.logitech.com] )

12. Then I tried the sequence of keys above that was supposed to be able to simply play a preset DVD number: Stop, Display, Enter, ### (disk number), Enter, and Display. I played with this, but couldn't quite get it to work. I am still hopeful, as it seems that these commands for a 997 get close. Maybe Display, DirectionRight, ###, Enter, Display, pause, Display will work, as this seems to with the Sony remote.

GOAL:

So, now I am trying to figure out how to get the remote to control the somewhat clumsy "Disk Explorer" interface on the Sony DVP-CX995V 400 DVD with my Harmony 670.

13. My goal is to have the "Play a DVD" activity turn on the player and leave you in the Disk Explorer menus.

QUESTIONS:

14. I have seen references to, but cannot find any details on how to "stop" the auto-play at power-on, so that you can go to the disk explorer. Maybe using the "eject" to open the player to stop auto-play. Not really sure how to to do this yet, even with the Sony Remote. Any ideas?

15. Does anybody have the keys or database that includes the "Folder" key. Does anybody know how to "learn" a function from my Sony remote into a "named" command that I can send as part of a startup sequence to the DVD player?

16. Maybe I cam train (learn) a key ( like "Guide" or "Info" ) to do the "Folder" button on the Sony remote and then use normal navigation keys to select and start the disk. At least then you could get to it once the previously selected DVD has started.

17. Has anybody actually accomplished item #8 above with any Harmony Remote and might at least send me the command sequence?

Thanks in advance for any help of guidance you can give on any of the above questions/statements.

14) The "Play on Enter" and "Stop On Exit" options are under the Watch DVD Activity > Settings > Change Options (for website interface: Activity > Customize > Change Options).

15) Did you try all the commands in device mode? I checked the Sony DVP-CX995V dataset, and it has the "Folder" command. If it does not work properly, then teach it from your OEM remote. You can also teach any missing command(s) from the OEM remote. The learning feature is under Device > Learn IR (for website interface: Device > More Options > Learn infrared commands). To learn a New command, you type the desired command name over the "MyNewCommand" box at the bottom of the learning page.

16) Using the Activity > Customize Buttons, you can map any command from any participating device to any activity key (soft or hard). You can also map a sequence of commands to a single key. Currently the sequence limits are 5 commands per sequence, and 10 sequences per activity.

17) Use the same sequence that works with the OEM remote. Note: Unlike the activity sequence button mapping, the activity startup/exit macros don't have a limit, but the sequence is sent only once (at startup/exit) and is not mapped to a key.

Okay, I had quite of bit of success. Thanks for the help in finding the various operations.

1. I trained the device from the original Sony remote, creating new commands for these "Disk Explorer" Keys: Folder, Sort, Edit, and File using the "Learn a New Command" box in the "Learn IR" command under the DVD Changer in the "Devices" Tab. Your probably found the "folder" command in there because I trained it there Monday morning...made it into the database fast [smile].

2. I also created new commands for DiskSkip+ and DiskSkip- keys on Sony remote in Explorer Mode, and then added commands for the same buttons to NextDisc and PreviousDisc while in DVD Mode.

3. I discovered that DiskSkip+ and NextDisc are the same command. I surmise that the only buttons with special functions while in Explorer Mode on the Sony remote are the four marked in blue: Folder, Sort, Edit, and File.

4. Now armed with the knowledge that I should only need these extra commands, I sat down with the Sony DLP-CX995V Remote and figured out that I can shorten the initial load time (autoplay is actually a problem with this DVD changer, not the remote, but I did turn off the automatic play command) by injecting a "Folder" command at just the moment that the DVD is loaded, but before it starts to play. The problem is that this exact moment varies, depending on which DVD loads (and probably whether the last DVD slot loaded is now empty or not). So I created an activity that waits a bit and then sends several "Folder" commands at half second intervals. See the final sequence below.

1 TV Set TV to Video 1
2 Rcvr Set AV Receiver to DVD/LD
3 DVD Pause for 10000 ms
4 DVD Pause for 2000 ms // 10 seconds wasn't long enough
5 DVD Send "Folder" command
6 DVD Pause for 500 ms
7 DVD Send "Folder" command
8 DVD Pause for 500 ms
9 DVD Send "Folder" command
10 DVD Pause for 500 ms
11 DVD Send "Folder" command
12 DVD Pause for 500 ms
13 DVD Send "Folder" command
14 DVD Pause for 500 ms
15 DVD Send "Folder" command
16 DVD Pause for 500 ms
17 DVD Send "Folder" command
18 DVD Pause for 500 ms
19 DVD Send "Folder" command
20 DVD Pause for 500 ms
21 DVD Send "Folder" command
22 DVD Pause for 500 ms
23 DVD Send "Folder" command

This works great. I select the "Choose a DVD" activity, wait a bit, and I am left in the Disk Explorer mode. I also added all of the extra keys to the programmable buttons.

5. I am still working on the details of a method to start the system, leaving the DVD player open to slot 400 (the place where we load DVD rentals). Once this works, a user would press the "Load a DVD" activity; the system would initialize, and open the player to slot 400; the user would insert a DVD and close the player; and the player will start playing it. I have the sequence right if I do it manually, but there must be some delays that let commands be dropped. I believe that with appropriate delays I will get it to work. The challenge here lies in the fact that when you can select an empty slot, the the player with actually switches to the next occupied slot. So, I used the DiskSkip- command to move the open carousel by 10. Thus we select disk 10 (which is occupied), open the player, and then diskskip- back to 400. That way disk 400 will play when the user closes the door.

1 TV Set TV to Video 1
2 Rcvr Set AV Receiver to DVD/LD
3 DVD Pause for 10000 ms
4 DVD Pause for 2000 ms // 10 seconds wasn't long enough
5 DVD Send "Stop" command
6 DVD Send "Display" command // get to DVD Player Menu
7 DVD Send "DirectionRight" command
8 DVD Send "1" command
9 DVD Send "0" command
10 DVD Send "Enter" command
11 DVD Pause for 2000 ms// let disk start changing to disk 10
12 DVD Send "Open" command
13 DVD Send "Display" command // closes the Display menus
14 DVD Send "DiskSkip-" command // change open carousel back to 400

I am having a problem with my 995 and my harmony 880. I am new to this so if this has been asked sorry.

I have my remote setup now to run dvd's by clicking on the media button and it seems to work ok. But I also use this 995 to play my cd's. How can I do the same thing and have it know what media list is for cds? It thinks my list is only dvds. Does this make sense?

Did you include the CDs in the media list?

You may have to create a separate Listen to CDs activity and give it a separate list of CDs in the jukebox.

Yes I listed the cd's too. I will try and figure out how to do what you said.

Thanks.

Edit: I don't see any way to edit the media list when I am in the CD activity. And when I acces the device it thinks everything is a DVD.

It may be that the device and/or activity is defined as DVD only. You might have to define 2 devices - one DVD jukebox and one CD jukebox and do separate activities but I haven't really used that feature to know for sure. You might need to call support.

How does it know the difference between CDs and DVDs in the media list you uploaded?

I tried to define it as 2 devices and it would not let me, it said it was the same device and combined them.

It doesn't konw the difference in the media list. It assumes everything I enter is a DVD.
