I want to tweak a little, but I'm no programmer. Is there an easy to use xml editor out there that would keep me out of trouble?

I'm just looking to change orders in menus, etc. I'm a bit hesitant to try it on the site itself.

Is it possible to d/l the xml file, edit it, then upload it back on the site?

Notepad. Wordpad, Word...anything that does text editing will work just fine.

I keep ALL of my xml in Word docs "just in case" I should ever need them.

I spent a good deal of time, last summer, looking for a dedicated XML editor. I found many, but they were harder to figure out than just doing it in Notepad.

This may be because XML is not really a subset of HTML, it is a different kind of "generic" coding language, if you will. With HTML coders, all the standard "words" are available to you, and shown in colours even. But XML "words" are pretty much made up by the person who is doing the coding.... so it's virtually impossible to come up with a standard language. XML describes the "contgent", not the layout". This is a hard concept to grasp.

On the other hand, when using the XML wizards at the Harmnoy website, it's pretty easy to see what you would do or change to customize your Devices and commands. And, you can copy the files to your PC and edit them, then paste them back in again up on the Web. EasyZapper has also made provisions for backing up your customized code, in most cases. ... Mike

Sorry: forgot to give you some editors to look at:

The bigger pro editors are pretty expensive.

As a software professional, I find XMLSpy to be the best XML editor. You can download an evaluation copy to do everything you need for 30 days from:

This may be totally overkill for Harmony needs (where notepad could suffice) but if you're interested in exploring the power of XML, this is the tool to use.

Yo, Anson: I left Spy off the list, along with a few others, because it's a wee bit complex for someone who just needs to string a few lines together. But it is a powerful tool, and the one I see used most often in the dev environments I've been in. ... Mike

After seeing the Harmony's XML format, I think something that viewed and edited it in a regedit-like "tree" format would work well. None of these opening and closing tags, just easy-to-userstand format. For instance:

 CONFIGURATOR
+-OPTIONS
| +-OPTION
| |   -NAME: ScrollShowsByPage
| | -VALUE: False
| +-OPTION
| -NAME: ScrollChannelsByPage:
| -VALUE: False
+-IMPLEMENTATIONS
| +-IMPLEMENTATION
| | -TARGET: DEFAULT
| | -DEVICENAME: 3575
| +-IMPLEMENTATION
| -TARGET: DEFAULT
|     -DEVICENAME: 3577
+-SETUPACTIONS
| +-SETUP
| | -DEVICENAME: 3575
| | -OPERATION: SetInput Tuner
| +-SETUP
|     -DEVICENAME: 3577
| -OPERATION: SetInput TV
+-TELEVISIONGUIDE
+-CHANNELLIST
+-CHANNEL
| -CHANNELID: 18380
| -NUMBER: 46
| -NAME: SpeedVision
| -PREFERENCE: Like
+-CHANNEL
-CHANNELID: 18141
-NUMBER: 35
-NAME: CNBC

Now, with some re-thinking of Harmony's XML tags (so ITEM and VALUE could be displayed on one line, rather than two), things would get even better.
