Does anyone know if Saving Private Ryan is going to be released in DVD soon. The VHS has been out for a while now and I am wondering what is up?
Thanks Dave

It's a Speilberg film. Currently, he doesn't want any of his "key" films to come out. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. He's made reference to waiting until DVD is "estabilished" - which he originally said was 1 million players. 1 million players came, and went. Some figured 2 million or 3 million. Well, we're now at over 2.7 million and still no "real" releases from Speilberg.

Maybe he doesn't need the money anymore?

What's equally mystifing is that he allowed SPR to be released on Laser. It almost didn't happen but he ok'ed it at the last minute. Explain that.

DVD.com is reporting that Private Ryan may be out on dvd as early as November but more like Christmas. Sound good to me!

Just picked this up at Darkhorizons.com.

Spielberg on DVD: Dawson-esque fans of Steven Spielberg will be very happy to hear about a report printed in the DVD Journal. At the recent Smithsonian Awards, a reader of the page manage to pump the legendary director for info regarding when all his movies will be available on DVD. Spielberg is being cautious it seems, waiting for at least three million player units to sell before many of his films will start committing to DVD. That figure is expected to be reached by the end of the year, so it'll be around early 2000 that we'll hopefully see some of his movies transferred. Thanks to 'Alexandra'.

Looks like will be waiting a little longer. But Steven along with George Lucas are slaves to marketing, so Christmas '99 is a better bet.

"Waiting for three million players"... hmm, I noticed that as of the first week in August, 2.96 million players have been sold. With over 325,000 being sold in July alone...

Pre order prices are dropping too -- first it was $20.99 (DVD WAVE), now $18.99 (DVD WAVE). How low can it go?? ;)

Saving Private Ryan is out!
I pre-ordered from Reel.com and got it yesterday. All the ads I've seen say it won't be out until today (11/2), but I watched it last night!
The quality looks pretty good and the surround is well-done.
I did notice some funny things, though:
1) When I first started the disc, the menu screens were all green and vertical lines ran through the whole picture. It resolved after making a selection and going back to the menu.
2) I don't remember if it was this way in the theater version, but in some scenes after the big beach assault, some of the images have a vertical blurring effect, almost like a film projector had some skipping. It was really evident in some fires in the background, and where dark and light were in close proximity. It wasn't evident in later scenes.
Now if we can convince Spielberg to release Schindler's List, Indiana Jones, etc...

Chester,

I didn't notice #1 on my DVP-S7000 but I definately did notice the vertical blurring and it too left me thinking "Was it that way in the theater??"

All these things are normal. The movie is supposed to look like old news reel footage. The vertical lines were supposed to look like scratches on the film. The blurring is also normal. There were no steady cams used in this movie. All the shots were made with hand helds, and so the focus can be off some when there is an explosion. Effect, effect, effect.
