I've just started, and the only DVD in my collection is BLADE RUNNER, based on a recommendation by ZDTV's Screensavers. I mostly bought it so that I could at least demonstrate my DVD player to guests. I can rent DVDs for 49 cents, so I've no great need to buy any now. I'd like to know what YOUR favorite DVD movies are, and why?

I'd have to say Contact and Das Boot were my two favourites, and I'd seen neither film before buying the DVDs.
Contact is a thought provoking story, superb video transfer and makes excellent use of 5.1. The first 2 minutes of the movie are worth the purchase price alone - especially if you want to demo your home theatre to friends! - and for the movie buffs there are 3 commentaries provided which should provide hours of fun. The SFX are superb and a lot would go unnoticed until you listen to the effects commentary.

As for Das Boot, this film absolutely drips with atmosphere, it's a great story, and the claustrophobic backdrop and sound is great - highlights include the shearing bolts of the sub under pressure! Again, there is a directors commentary and a making of extra.

Enjoy!

To showcase your system (great video and audio):

A Bugs Life
The Fifth Element
Godzilla
Lost In Space

Several fantastic surround sound scene can be found in Cutthroat Island, though the video is a bit lacking. For excellent sound in a drama you might want to try The Man in the Iron Mask or The Mask of Zorro.

Some of my favorite discs also include George of the Jungle, Mouse Hunt (Yeah, yeah, I know), The Mask (hmm, lots of mask movies), Star Trek: Insurrection and a bunch of others. It's a great format for any kind of movie. :-)

Hey, Blade Runner was my first DVD also! But now that I have been buying DVD's since March 1999...I would have to say Blade because of the cool interactive menu's and Super Speedway by IMAX, you dont get any closer to a cockpit of an Indy car than that! Plus, its fun to show off to friends.

By far, my favorite DVD (or any format for that matter) is Aliens. This is James Cameron's greatest film (Titanic doesn't even come close) of all time. It totally rocks on DVD. Everything from the deleted scenes to the kickin' 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround absolutely makes this a must have.

I agree with Daniel's recommendations. I don't have about 3 of those that he recommended, but I heartily agree with the rest.

The first DVD I put in my player to test out my system, and one that I used to demostrate to visitors to my home theatre: Tomorrow Never Dies. You get to demostrate the sound very early on.

Since then, I've found a few others (those Daniel mentioned included). I'd also add Face/Off, GoldenEye (the gun barrel opening shot gives a very spacious soundstage), Armageddon, Deep Impact, the Jackal, the Siege...and Daylight.

Daylight's surround starts very much the minute the movie starts. The explosion scene starts at around the 15 minute mark, and after that, I think, the sub and rear speakers never stops.

So if you want to really show off your system, Daylight is a must.

Of all the Alien titles, I think Alien Resurrection has the best 5.1 sound. The first 2, I thought that in the 5.1 version, the dialogue is much softer than the effects/music, whereas the Dolby Pro-logic version actually sounded better. (The first two movies are also pre-Dolby 5.1 anyway).

Wondeful assortment! I've enjoyed nearly all the movies listed here, with the exception of Daylight. In fact, I've never heard of it till now. I'll definitely look for it though. Since I've got a wife who won't watch a scary movie, can you guys tell me which movies have good 5.1 sound and the timid people will enjoy? Any Romantic Comedies in your collection, guys?

Must have the Fifth Element. It is absolutely breath-taking for audio and sound. I also recommend:
Gattaca
Tina Turner in Amsterdam (dts)
Das Boot
The Mask of Zorro
Blade Runner
Ronin
Super Speedway
Antz
Dragonheart (dts)

I can't believe that no one mentioned T2. The movie is great and the DVD is commonly used as a reference standard when testing Home Theater setups with "live" material.

THIS is THE disk that I use to show people who don't know about home theater or DVD what its all about.

The scooter chase scene will shake the pictures off your walls.

Super Speedway is a must. You can rent it from www.netflix.com. $4.00 for the one week rental, $2.00 for shipping(both ways, package provided), .99 cents for each additional week. Please refer my name so I can get free rentals. thank you.

Another excellent movie is the Ghost and the Darkness. The movie itself is great but with DVD the panoramic shots of Africa are outstanding with vivid color and detail. The music is also superb.

I recently bought Titanic on DVD and watched it this weekend. I kept my eye open for the layer change (i.e. pause), but never saw it.

Does anyone know where the layer change occurs? Have they perfected it so it's not noticeable or did they just place it discretely somewhere?

It was too bad they couldn't put extra stuff on the DVD, but then again, after placing a 3h15m movie on one side, there's not much more room for other stuff.
