Sony DVPCX995V reads CDs but not DVDs.


I have read on this website that I need a new optical unit. I purchased one on eBay that came with instructions. The instructions says that this unit uses two different voltages for CDs and DVDs. Between AV5 and IOP1 the voltage should be 60 – 75mA for CDs. Between AV5 and IOP2 the voltage should be 40 – 55mA for DVD's. On the IOP2 block. I guess that is the circuit board on the optical unit but I cannot remove the metal plate that covers it without desoldering wires. The new optical unit on eBay, was broken when I got it, so I put my old unit back in place. I believe if I adjust my old optical unit I could get it to work. However, when I reinstalled the optical unit, it will no longer read any disk. The motor will not even spin. The black carriage unit traverses towards the spindle and keeps crashing into it. There is a small black microswitch on the laser unit that is supposed to tell the unit it has reached the end. This switch seems not to be working or the timing is off. If I pull the laser back, it will return back to the spindle and keep crashing into it, as if it doesn’t know that it has reached the end. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I think these things are obsolete. I can purchase a 2 TB USB 2.0 hard drive on sale $149 as of black Friday 2009. The average DVD is only 3.5 GB. This means I could put 571 DVDs on a USB hard drive plus put thousands of MP3s. The new DVD and Blu-Ray players have USB ports on them that you can play movies. You can simply create folders of different genre with titles and drag-and-drop your DVDs onto the hard drive from your computer. You’ll never have to reenter or lose the information like you do with the Sony DVPCX995V. Plus you will never scratch your DVDs.
