Sony advertises its new bdps350 player as having a 6 sec. load time when in "Quick start" mode. Well.....I tried one today and it's actually more like 15-16 seconds (until the disc will play) but it's far better than anything I have personally experienced thus far.

Anyone else tried this player or know of other ones with similar speed right now?

It seems companies are counting "boot time" and "load time" as separate entities. Sort of like timing a Windows computer up to the first signs of the GUI (mouse cursor), but not all the loading that occurs after that.

In a Yamaha training the other day, the instructor claimed that a Sony unit had a boot to play time (does that phrase cover it?) of about ten seconds if the disc is already in it.

Well, at least it's better than my Scientific Atlanta cable box. That thing takes about 5 minutes to boot up whenever the power goes out or I have to reset it.

You have cable service and don't use a TiVo??

Not really a useful option in Canada. Rogers, the cable company, does NOT support cable cards, and has NO open QAM channels whatsoever, so the only way to get digital cable and/or HDTV is by renting/purchasing one of their boxes (I have a couple HD DVRs).

I also have DVR for my OTA HDTV setup, but due to distances it's not the most reliable to record from, and isn't dual tuner.

We have a Pioneer Elite BDP-05 that we just got in. I put a disc in the tray and hit play on the remote, it took 15 seconds to close and load up the disc. I thought that was pretty quick.

Hey Daniel, I too have the Scientific Atlanta 8300HDC box, and it really does take about 5 mins! The worse part is it reboots randomly during the early am, usually about 4am for some odd reason? TWC also changed the DVR features which really sucks!!! No more skipping by quarter markers. Bastards!

Back to the start up times with Blu-Ray, as anyone else experienced a "non-Resume" feature when stopping a Blu-Ray media disc? I know I posted in another thread, but sometimes people over look it when their dialed into a post like this.

Seems like on the Sony's you can press STOP once to resume and twice if you want it to go back to the beginning. Is that what you mean?

It seems to be a disc to disc thing. Sometimes if I hit stop it will resume from that point, on other discs not.

it depends if the menu is BD-J or not. With BD-J the player needs to load the code for the menus so it loses track of where it was.

I'm fairly certain that PC-based BD playback can remember BD-J status, so I guess the issue is the complexity and potential storage requirements of maintaining memory for BD-J titles on standalong players.

I would have thought the PS3 team would have taken a crack at it by now (what with the processing power and storage available).
