Has anyone purchased this movie in either Blu-ray or HD? I'm curious about what audio is on the discs. From a few web stores I've looked at (CC, Deep Discount, etc.), it looks like either format only has DD 5.1. No HD audio or even standard DTS? Can anyone confirm this.

The HD-DVD version has Dolby TrueHD and DD+. It also has PIP and lots of extras.

no they both have lossless, but BD has better audio

this was probably my most anticipated HD-DVD yet, but unfortunately i was quite dissapointed by the PQ and the sound. i saw it in the theatre and thought it had a somewhat dark and grainy look to it, i also thought the sound wasnt very good, i however dont frequent theatres often so thought these were just side effects of not being my own HT with my bright plasma and my SS system balanced for my listening position.

i was wrong, its just a dark and grainy movie, i would assume to cover the extensive FX....? and i had to turn on the dialogue enhancer on my reciever just to balance the sound out a little.

i do have to say though, after putting the regular side in my Elite DVD upscaler, the HD-DVD is WAY better than SD!!! the regular version is almost as bad as a pirated copy i saw months ago.

Film grain is a part of the film, a bad set-up/transfer can not make it worst. On the other hand a bad digital transfer will make it less apparent. Seeing it is actually the sign of a good transfer. In most cases FG is an artefact of the media and one that gets amplified by each copy that is made (like making a photocopy of a photocopy), but in this case the FG is there on purpose and was the effect that the director was going for. So in this particular instance not having it on the HD disks would have been an even bigger travesty then most.

Isn't 300 an entirelly digital production? That would make film grain more of an artistic choice... ;-)

sure, i've seen AND appreciated this artistic touch in the past, i just didnt expect it from this movie, being mostly CG i figured it would be very crisp. a movie i did appreciate FG (watched it for about the 10th time last weekend - then went out and bought the soundtrack, which is also awesome and crystal clear) is Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - a must see IMO.

A bit out of topic, but supposedly one source is saying they sold 250k copies in BD and HD DVD combined. Though they did not say if these Nielsen numbers, North America or anything.

I haven't decided if I'll by the HD version but I am inclined as it has both the SD & HD versions. I have a DivX version that I re-scaled for TV, 16:9 presentation and considering this kind of conversion, it looks good and is a good action picture.
