I've got a MX-700 and currently a AD-2500, which does not have discretes for ON and OFF.

So, I'm looking to purchase something that will play various formats and handle different media types well. Xvid, DvD, etc. Would like it to read DVD-R, CDR, etc, etc. It MUST have a discrete ON\OFF control code. Quality can be fairly low (note I'm using an APEX and am happy with the quality).

No need for high definition formats.

Thanks,
Tomas

I've got an ancient Pioneer that is the only DVD player I've ever had that plays any kind of original or copied DVD I put in it. It does have discrete ON/Offs. I suggest looking at the newer Pioneer DVD players, although I've not prersonally bought one. Of these that I have, only the APEX and the Panasonic seem capable of reading most of what I put in them.

Samsung DVD-Recorder with NTSC tuner: Won't play most original DVDs, but does play every copy I've put in it.
Cyberhome DVD with 1080 upscaling: Piece of junk.
Truetech DVD/HT_in_a_box: Seems to work, but has manual POWER button. Real pain.
APEX DVD: So far reads everything. Using it as a music player to feed outdoor speakers. Will read MP3s off a DVD, and will randomize playback.
Panasonic DVD recorder with ATSC/NTSC tuner: So far plays all I've put in it. Tunes and records digital OTA channels.
Pioneer DVD: Most expensive and most reliable. Very old tank. I know it has discrete ON and OFF, as I use them with my universal remote.

Last night I ordered a Pioneer DV400V DVD Player. Less than $100 and spouted good media compatibility and DivX\DVD formats.

Has component video output, but I did not see mention of optical audio output so I hope to see and optical output on this player.

From what I could tell, most of the Pioneer models have similar looking remotes so I have a feeling that the discrete functionality will be there....although that's what I'm worried about.

All in all, it's a small risk...$100 if it doesn't meet my requirements.

Thanks
Tomas

Which model do you have? I've been eying the DMR-EZ27 but have read that the recording of the HD-OTA signals is downconverted to 480 then upconverted when playing back. Any insight would be helpful.

I've got the DMR-EZ17 from Target. Yes, the HD channels are downconverted to record. I haven't played with it to see if they are passed through at full res, downconverted, or upconverted again on the way back to the TV since I'm not using it as a tuner for my HDTV.

Ive got a Pioneer DV-575 and it reads anything. I've got a disc that Denon, Sony, Samsung won't read, they just grind (because the disc is old and a bit knocked about). Yet the Pioneer reads quite happily with no problems.

Discretes? Well just send a play to turn it on and power toggle to turn it off. There may be discretes for it but I haven't bothered trying.
