I have no idea. I have been able to copy it to my computer with dvd fab decrypter but when i tried to play it it says something about it being a .dat file. I can't get it to play. I have a feeling i can change something about the file or file name and get it to play but i am very new at this and don't know what to do. I am sure it is simple. Can you help me? If not with fab then can you tell me how dvd shrink works and if how to do what i want. Any help appreciated.

Charlie

Try camcorderinfo.com. The experts in their editing section might be able to help.

You can use Womble's MPEG Video Wizard ([Link: videohelp.com]) to do exactly what you need. The only thing is you might need their DVD version (haven't used it so can't help there) to take everything back to a DVD.

What I typically do is move only the VOB files over to my PC. I load the VOB files and edit as needed. I then output the project as a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file without recompression (keeps the original quality as the original). I then load the MPEG2 file into my DVD authoring program to create a DVD that suits my needs.

A good source of info is www.videohelp.com. They also have an incredible number of freeware, shareware and payware descriptions along with user satisfaction with each too.

Hope that helps.

Since you alreday ripped the DVD with decrypter, you alreday have the VOB (video object bodies) files on your PC. I believe your PC came with MS Movie Maker alreday installed. If you know which VOB files you need just import the into Movie Maker and edit. If you do not know which VOBs contain the footage you need, rename the VOBs with .mpg or .mpeg as VOBS are mpeg2 files. Once you have renamed the VOBs, they will play in any DVD sofware playing program on your PC. again, choose what you need, edit in Movie Maker. When finished, render to a new file as an MPEG2. This way you won't be recompressing. Keep in mind that if you add any transitions , titles or anything else, you will have to render.

One problem...WMP doesn't always handle MPEG's the right way. Sometimes just the video or audio appears but not the other.

However, if you convert the VOB/MPEG to WMV, you can use it then. Although that's a time consuming process on most computers.

There are other PC software movie players that are available for free other than WMP, like the free DivX.

If Charlied only wants to edit the movie and then burn to DVD ( I'm assuming he does), converting an MPEG2 standard file(s) to a WMV (Window Media Video) file and then rendering it back to an MPEG2 for DVD use is a pretty big waste of energy not to mention the nose dive in quality the resulting file will likely have.
