I have three of the Sony DVD-CX777ES changers and all three of them will not read Disk 1 - but will read Disk 2 of the set.

These are controled by an Escient DVD-M100.

I have tried two different DVD sets.

Any ideas!

Ted

Both sets of dvd's play fine on the computer in my system.

Is there a specific error that comes up on the front display?

There is a workaround....let the player recognize disc #2....then pull it and put in disc #1....without letting it see a blank space. Then just go in and edit the title ....it will play just fine.

So is this a Sony problem or an Escient problem?

More likely a glitch in the TOC on the DVD, or perhaps the Sony, but I haven't encountered this so far in >600 DVDS.

We had the same problem today as well.. sony 777es with Escient not recognizing Casino Royale. We found that we just edited the disc info and titled it by it's name then did a search for movie and it found the cover art and played perfectly. We also noticed a few other disc's had the same problem, but was fixed in the same matter.

I do apologize in advance if anyone feels my post is taking this thread off topic.

"joshc", you indicated that the problem has happened to you with a few other DVDs. can you let us know if all the errors occured on Sony and/or Columbia studio movies?

Also, has anyone tried the disc just in the Sony changer so as to isolate if the problem was on Sony or Escient?

I'm just trying to determine if the Sony changer is having problems with Sony's own use of their ARCCOS type encryption as Casino Royale DVD is from Sony. This is the type of encryption where the movie studio (Sony & affiliates) intentionally places a bad sector or direction in the DVD's .IFO file. In general, a hardware DVD player, set-top box will just ignore the bad sector or direction and continue, but a software based player (PC type) keeps looking and looking until an error occurs, usually with the "cyclic reduncancy check" error.

TIA,
Erock

erock1,

They were all Sony movies. The particular ones we came across were...

Casino Royale, Marie Antenette, and The Holiday.

josch, thank you. That information is very helpful. By any chance did you happen to remove Escient from your CX777ES and try to play the movies? Again, I'm tryinmg to determine if the CX777ES or Escient is the problem. I have a strong hunch that the CX777ES is the problem. I believe that the player is having problems recognizing Sony's use of it's own ARCCOS. The 3 movies you named all came out in 2006 and I have found a more agressive use of ARCCOS in the studio's latest releases. Again, this is only a theory but I'm thinking that the software Sony used in the DVD changer is modified from the program used in single players.

Again, if it's not too much trouble, could you remove Escient and try the movies with just the player.

TIA,
Erock

We might me able to try next time we at our customers house, but I can't give you an ETA of when that may be. I can say that the movies played just fine with the escient in the loop if that makes any difference.

Hi All - I'm new here specifically trying to find an answer to a similar problem. I think I may have some interesting information for all of you and hopefully we can find a solution to what i believe is an even bigger problem.

I have an Elan VIA!DVDj controller using a Sony DVP-CX777ES 400-Disc DVD Carousel. It's been pretty good. I haven't really even had trouble with the system recognizing any disc content. I have some live music bootleg DVD's and have even started loading Humax/Tivo saved movies and it always see's a disc.

I also tend to buy a lot of new releases as they come out from Amazon or my local Stop & Shop. In the last 2 weeks, NONE of the new releases will catalog. They seem to load into the Sony player and then time out. Hence, they won't catalog and/or play in the internal Sony. But yes, ALL of them will play in my Denon single DVD player just fine.

I have a licensed home automation specialist that has been installing the AV system plus some other stuff in our house. He has a newer model of the same Sony CX777ES at his home and they all seemed to play fine there too.

I'm pretty convinced that there's some new encryption/data protection coming out with new releases that many of the older Sony players aren't recognizing. If that's the case, what are the chances that Sony will issue a firmware update in any of the near future?

Here's the list of new releases that I've had trouble with:

Happy Feat - (not sure of the co. - my mom took it!)
The Pursuit of HappyNess - Sony
Casino Royale (Disk1 only - Disk2 fine) - Sony
Eragon - FoxHome
the Holiday - Sony
Stranger Than Fiction - Sony
Blood Diamond - Warner Video

Would love your thoughts.

This is indeed a combination of all of the above at fault. As stated Sony has instituted a new form of protection on their DVD's. The 777 will play the Casino Royale just fine by itself, and even with the Escient connected. However, it will hang when the Escient try's to query the disc on first load, because the TOC request will fail due to this new Sony Disc format. I find it somewhat amusing that Sony Changers fail to read Sony discs :) Also as stated above, the recommended work around for this is to load Disc 2, (or any other readable disc) just to fill the slot so the Escient doesnt think its empty, then swap it out for the correct movie and manually edit the information to contain the correct data.

This is also what Escient will recommend you do if you call their tech support.
