OK, now I've got a 1080p LCD. WHEN does anyone here predict Blu-ray or HDDVD players will come down in price, say to the <$200 range?
Why? Because until I can at least RENT the High def DVDs, the high price of the movies I'll watch only once makes no monetary sense. And until those players get cheaper, not many people will buy them. And until MANY people own them, the rental places won't be renting High-Def DVDs. Chicken and egg thing.

Online is a viable option, but my habit is to pick up a DVD while I'm in my grocery store which has a large area devoted to DVD/VHS/GAME rentals. They rent for five day periods, and that's about how often I go back for more groceries anyway.
Anyone else have a prediction?

$200? Probably not until 2008 or 2009.

I'm gonna bet at least one HD disk player goes below $200 for the Christmas '08 season.
My Popular mechanics magazine suggests taking the drive out of an XBOX and installing in a PC. There's a message bulletin board where I work where I have seen used Xbox 360s for sale several times, usually for about 1/2 retail. College kids that have them sell them off when they've grown tired of playing or need the cash. Of course you'll still be stuck watching HD Disks on your computer, but I can plug mine into my 1080p Samsung HDTV and my video card supports 1920x1080.

No...the 360 doesn't have a built in HD player. You can get the external HD-DVD USB add on for $200, and use it with your computer. I'm actually looking into it myself.

You're right, OTAHD. I had to go back and look up the article, but of course it said the info was on their web site. $200 isn't bad since when I looked for a HDDVD ROM drive for PCs, they were in the $400+ range. One site said the drive used in the Xbox add-on was made by Toshiba.

I was surprised at the amount of info on doing the above (putting the xbox 360's HD-DVD ROM in a PC. Here's an encouraging link (over 73 pages of posts): [Link: avsforum.com]L8r, Don
