I have been reading with great interest all of the IR remote control to Playstation 3 with great interest. And seen the article on how to do it.

But it seems these things are not as easy to come by as thought. I've checked every where that I know of in NYC and can't find anything. (Don't really like doing ebay as I'm sure that would be the first response. I have checked and most of the stuff is from Hong Kong with really crazy shipping prices)

My question has to do with this.

I have a USB cable with one end off, a old PS2 multi-tap docking station that has the ir receiver and a cable that that has the female end of the PS2. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and cable crimpers.

I was wondering if anybody already knows or someone with one of these PS2 to USB cables. Can you tell me what the pin outs from the PS2 and to which USB pin it goes to so that I can make the cable I need?

If I understand correctly, you're trying to stick a USB cable directly on the end of a PS2 accessory. Won't work.

If I have this wrong please clarify. :-)

I agree with you because i've never seen it done, just want to see why.

Can't put a USB cable on a device that isn't actually USB. Sort of like asking which wires in a S-Video plug do you swap to plug a PAL-only DVD player into a NTSC-only television. You're going to need an actual powered converter to do that, just like PS2 to USB.

Thanks. The cable I have is the one that connects the PS2 controller to the USB on the computer. (Works fine) When I plug that cable into the PS3 it locks up all the controls so nothing works on the PS3 including the bluetooth controls.

Daniel, thanks for explaining, but I have seen people use a regular USB cable, and cut the end, and then take a PSP charger and cut the end of that and solder them together and make a working charger. Is this something that would apply to this situation?

A mere charger is a different situation, since all you're looking for is power and USB does provide power (although I'm surprised that it'd be exactly what the PSP is looking for).

Orlando: it sounds like whatever PS2 to USB adapter you have the PS3 doesn't like at all. What is it? And are you running the latest firmware?

That's a totally different situation.

A USB port outputs 5V across one pin with another as ground. By cutting off the end of a USB cable, and splicing in a PSP charger cable to the right wires, you're now outputting 5V. Assuming the PSP runs off of 5V, then you're simply using the USB port as a power supply.

Likewise, you can reverse the process and charge a device that charges by USB by using a DC power supply (6V or greater) and a 5 volt regulator (about $2 from RadioShack), and the opposite end of a USB cable.

Totally unrelated to the PS2 controller port.

I’m running what I think is the latest firmware 1.51.

The cable I am using is a Dilong Pu120T. I bought it on EBay against my better judgment as I usually don’t like buying from there. Especially stuff like this when you never know what you are getting. Of course when you ask they say it should work. When it doesn’t, you get it wasn’t designed to. Now I’m out 10 bucks for nothing and it is not worth the trouble making an issue of it with them. The cable does have a little PC card in it as to make it look like a Hub to windows. And I was just thinking it was a cable cross that was causing the PS3 control lockup.

I just checked my PSP, it is indeed 5V although the adapter says 2A while I thought I read somewhere that USB ports were only supposed to use up to 500mA.

I don't see anything about the Dilong Pu120T that screams "this won't work", however it could be something about how they handle dual connectors (the Radio Shack model I have is a single connector only).

I'm thinking it was a bad cable. I ordered another one from a different source and it looks the same. But this one doesn't freeze up the playstation. And while I can't seem to get a PS2 controller to work I am using a old N-Fusion multi-tap that has a built in IR receiver and a cheap remote and it works on the movies.

Now all I need is the codes.

The pictures look exactly the same. I guess the one thing that I missed orignally was that one said it was good for PS3 and the other made no mention.
