Is this as great as the reviews say? We just brought a Sony SXRD HDTV (60'), is this player better than Sony's HDMI DVD player?

The $229* question!!! If someone that "actually owns" one of these can provide their own opinion, I'm sure a lot of folks would like to know. I've been monitoring the forums over at AVS and nothing yet. Lots of talk on the 981HD's predecessor, the 971H.

Here is a link to a very good user review: [Link: prillaman.net]

If you don't have a 1080p set, just look at the reviews for the 971H, as the 981HD's performance is identical to the 971H at 720p and 1080i.

I have reviews on all Oppo DVD players on the hometheaterspot.com.

Thanks Mike! I wasn't familiar with the hometheatersopt web site and after browsing the forums, including reading your reviews and posts, I've joined.

Reards,
Erock

P.S. The fella (jakelm3075) who had all the problems with his 981 and needed a replacement, he never said what happend to the "red blotching" problem he was experiencing with the new player. Any answer?

I have similar hardware. A Sony 60” SXRD XBR1 and an Oppo 971.

There have been a few minor Oppo problems. All but one have been corrected by new firmware.

My connection is DVI to HDMI. The remaining glitch is, if I switch the TV input to DVD before the DVD is powered on, the TV will not sync with the DVD player. Not a big problem.

As for the performance of the Oppo: TERRIFIC! I retired a $2500 ARCAM in favor of the Oppo!

Hello All,

I ordered the 971-player today. I'll let everyone know the outcome.

I just got my 981 today, it's running through a Samsung 4696 @ 1080P, and on the discs I have tried, the picture quality is REALLY GOOD. This was replacing an older Denon, and the picture looked washed out and also showed some overscanning. The 981 for me is worth it, if you can use the 1080P.

I have the 981 also, how do you upconvert to 1080p? So far all dvds are 480p. I pressed the hdmi botton on the remote. And 480p pops up.

You have to either have no disc in, or have play stopped, then puch the HDMi button and it should cycle through the settings.
