Aloha - I'm guessing that there's a link to this answer if somebody might please point me in the right direction. Would like to take advantage of all 8 analog input channels on my Outlaw 990. Is it possible to split the Oppo 981hd's LS/RS analog signals, with or without amplification ? Is so, would appreciate recommendation for proper cables and/or amplifier. Thanks.

Splitting the signal would reduce the strength which would make all rear channels lower in volume. Which, if you then compensate for in calibration, would make them far to loud under any other input.

That's what I suspected. I was wondering if there was an equivalent for the "inline" amplifier that's sometimes used for stengthing cable signals. I remember reading somewhere that users had tried splitting and I was hoping to get info on their solutions. Thanks for the advice.

Might be easier to bug Outlaw into allowing you to specify 5.1 or 7.1 for that input and then applying PL2x processing when set to 5.1. ;-)

I assume you're doing this for SACD? Because otherwise I would think the Outlaw would do better decoding than the DVD.

Thanks Daniel, I'll give them a heads-up, although I suspect that this would prove to be a complicated workaround in that this would involve taking the signal out of the analog domain. I think that currently the signals are passed more-or-less as is to the amplifier. I know this is a potentially dying audio format, but I kind of wish Oppo would have added two duplicate output channels. Aloha.

Not sure about that - the specifications page mentions digital bass management for the 7.1 analog input, so it's probably processing it anyways (unless you specifically use the bypass mode which it says is also an option).

So it does... I considered contacting Outlaw as you suggested, but I've also received feedback pointing out that this would defeat the purpose of 'discrete' channels, and I can see that point as well. I'm curious - can the new HD-DVD formats support multichannel audio? Seems like this could help revive interest on the part of recording engineers...
