I just bought my son a Panasonic DVD recorder to connect into our AV system so that he can get all of his stored TV shows off of my PVR. :)

My question is, what DVD media should I be getting? Not brand so much but ... what format? Would you normally record these things in DVD-RAM format? I guess I just don't know what format a regular DVD is. I'd like it if he could watch his recorded DVDs on his computer or on another DVD player in the house... like his Wii or PlayStation.

I just need to buy some blank media and realized I don't know what to buy. :)

DVD-R is what you want kind sir! DVD-R is the most compatible with other DVD players/PC's. DVD RAM is a good format for watching ON the Panasonic as there are VERY few brands that will allow DVD RAM playback. the nice thing about RAM is the amount of detailed editing it will allow you to do.

i personally upgraded about a year ago from Panny DVD recorder to a Poineer DVD Recorder with a 160Gig Hard drive. this makes a world of difference as you can edit all your programming BEFORE you burn your DVD's. I actually leave most of my material on the HDD so i can just view it directly from there!

i can appreciate being a gift for your son and your reasoning for getting it you may not be interested in the extra expense of the HDD. anyway, all the best!

Thank you very much for the response. The one with the hard drive sounds like what I'll buy for ME when my son finally goes off on his own! :)

Careful though, some recorders only can use DVD+R. Both DVD-R and DVD+R can be used by a standard DVD player once "finalized." Check your recorder's manual to see what formats it will burn to.

my LG DVD player will NOT play DVD+R. nor will my friends DVD player, i dont know the brand. it seems to me DVD-R is now the standard. i would be VERY suprised if your panasonic recorder wouldnt accept that format, especially considering i owned a Panny recorder and thats what i used.

Hmm...interesting. I've never had a problem with DVD+R, unless the player is more than five or six years old. My recorder, although not Panasonic, is DVD+R only.

Above all read the manual.

I just bought a Samsung DVD recorder. Nothing obvious on the outside of the case or the box, but the manual clearly states the only kind of media it will record on is DVD-R and DVD-RW.

OK I just checked the manual. This Panasonic DMRE S15 handles +R, -R, +RW, -RW, +R DL, -R DL, and DVD-RAM. There is lots of cross-referencing about what kind of discs have to be finalized in order to play them on other players, etc. I will read up on that.

Looks like the -R discs would be a safe bet for general recording. I'll look at what formats the DVD player we already have can play, and I should probably look into what formats teh DVD drives in computers like so that if he wanted to just watch one of his recorded DVDs on his computer, he could do that too. THEN I'll look at what formats the Nintendo Wii can play......

OR... maybe I'll just get some -R discs and let HIM do all this work :)

i shant get into detail but i burn ALOT of dvd's for friends/co workers. no one has ever brought one back due to non compatibility(or for any other reason) which is why i'm so confident in what i'm saying. if you have the manuals handy then great, check it out. but really you are %99.9 safe with DVD-R. i would have said %100 but apparently the poster above owns a machine that wont playback -R.

FYI-you will have to finalize DVD-R before playing it in another player. this is as simple as selecting the option through the burning process and it will be done automatically-takes about an extra 2 minutes.

Yes, you will need to finalize it. -R's wold be just fine.

Looks like I'm getting a new recorder too, mine just died last night. It's toast now. :-(

i've been VERY pleased with the Pioneer 160Gig HDD DVD recorder. i went through 2 LG 250gig recorders. they both malfunctioned in the same way about 1 week after the 30day return window! fortunately the manager was nice and allowed me to switch it both times. i odbviously went for the pioneer the last time. it has far superior editing and burning abilities, and hasnt malfunctioned once since i got it a year ago.
