I'm already up to 16 Blu-Ray titles... and I still don't even have anything to play them on! I was planning on using a PS3 for playback - figure it's one of the safest first generation players to get due to years of expected firmware updates - but actually getting one has been impossible.

So, there on my shelf sits a little section of these compact cases with a wide range of movies that I haven't even seen yet (in any format).

I guess the egg really did come before the chicken... :-)

So, anyone else into the high def game yet?

I have no player yet either. I'm waiting for the second gen Toshiba HD-XA2.
I have one combo movie, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Watched it on my Denon. And someday I will watch it in HD.

I'm waiting until someone creates a driver for the 360's HD-DVD add on, and then I'll buy the add-on and use my computer to feed it into my TV. Then I'll probably buy HD-DVDs.

Zero! I'm not playing that game until there's either a winner in the format war or they come out with a universal player that will play both formats as well as DVD-A and SACD.

Ah, but it's the danger of living on the bleeding edge that makes this interesting. Is the one you pick going to be the Beta, or the VHS? Or maybe it's going to be a Video 2000!

So true, on those same lines, remember 8-track or cassette. :-)

Zero HD or Blur-ray discs. I have 159 disc slots left on my second DVD player (DVP-CX985V), I'm hoping by the time it's get filled, a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD changer will be introduced on the market.

I gambled on the Beta VHS war and lost. I bought the Sony Beta player because of better picture quality. Obviously, in the end, it was the wrong decision. Anyone want to buy a bunch of Beta Max movies?

none, and i wont until the format war is resolved.
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

My plan is to wait until I can get a blu-ray player for $200ish. By that time BluRay movies should be rentable. Until then I just got a mediocre samsung DVD-R135 with HDMI output and 1080p upscaling. It does a pretty good job of making DVDs look good in HD.

My guess is you will be waiting a long time.
Sony won't use the VC-1 codec as they would have to pay to use it. And the HD-DVD group won't be making a dual player anytime soon as they would have to pay Sony.

Bottom line for me is I can play my standard DVD's on a Toshiba. Will a BD player do that?
Flame away!

BD officially supports MPEG-2, AVC and VC-1. Many BD discs use AVC and VC-1.

And yes, *all* BD players out there play standard DVDs.

Yep, I was wrong about a BD player not playing a standard DVD. Sorry.
Still reading up trying to figure out the codecs used for both formats. From what I have read though HD-DVD has better audio and video than BR, for now at least.
God I hate format wars!!!

no. For Audio BD is much better. There are more disks with lossless (actually many with PCM) and even some of them with 24/48 lossless (Fox/Disney). PQ depends how you look at it (pun not intended). If you compare the best of either format BD is better. If you compare average they are the same and if you compare worst BD is a bit worst. In the end either way HD is way better then SD

Yeah, BD started off with some stinker transfers - compounded by unfortunante flaws (or at least poor decisions) by the one player available.
