TOKYO, June 6 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Pioneer Corp. (6773.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it would postpone the North Amercian launch of next-generation DVD players using Blu-ray technology to this autumn from its previous launch schedule of June, citing a delay in the development process.

Pioneer is a supporter of the Blu-ray format for next-generation optical disks. Blu-ray is up against a rival standard called HD DVD.

That's got to hurt....Blu-ray is a sinking ship

Considering how these things have been in development for **years** now... and that Blu-Ray has been out in Japan for a while...

Yes, the Pioneer has been delayed. But the Samsung is still scheduled to be released the 25th of this month @ $999.
Meanwhile RCA now has a HD DVD player @ $499. And the Toshiba has a firmware update for their players. Part of the update supposedly fixes the HDMI connectivity problem.
It's starting to get exciting.

The Samsung has been postponed officially til sometime in July, and unofficially it appears the first shipment date will be around August 7.

Also, keep in mind the RCA is a clone of the Toshiba A1.

Spiky is that true? I have not heard anything from them.

PS the RCA is rebagaged.

All I can find for a release date is June 25th. Where did you read it was postponed?

A1.

Perfect. Make a clone of a problematic player.

All the stores now have ship dates of late July at the earliest from what I've heard. Crutchfield, Circuit City, etc. Amazon is august apparently, but they are often behind the others.

Panny and Pioneer have delayed to November.

What's your source for this Spiky? Video Business reported just yesterday that the Samsung was a go for June release and already shipping to retailers.

Here's the quote:

Samsung did confirm its first Blu-ray players, expected to be priced around $1,000, will street on June 25.

“They’ve started shipping to stores, including Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears and some of the specialty shops, like J&R Music and Huppins HiFi,” said Jose Cardona, Samsung spokesman. “We’re on schedule.”

that it was an assumption based on others officially being delayed and some web sites with later dates for the Samsung.

Hopefully I'm wrong. Sony and others keep pushing back the time and dropping features from their machines. Samsung seems to still be on track and already had more features than anyone else.

Something doesn't add up.

Maybe they will delay it forever. Then there won't be a format war :)

this is second hand, but I think you are wrong. JUst heard from a credible person that has a good contact inside Samsung that it is a go. What he told me is around the 20th they will do the shipping so that retailers will have time to set up the displays for the 25'th launchday (for the US) and that launch day will be the 30'th for Canada

I still read June 25th as well. I tried tracking down what Spikey said. Crutchfield says late June here:

Circuit City says June 25th here:

Amazon has no date of release anywhere that I could find. Best Buy is saying sometime between August 10th and the 17th. And I couldn't find the Samsung at Sears at all.
Spikey- How about a link. I'm curious as to where you are reading this information.
