we have a jvc xv-n212s dvd player, its nothing fancy but worked fine till a little bit ago. just recently it stopped playing dvds. it still works to play cds though. that is what is really confusing. it can still put our an audio and visual signal, but it doesnt recognise dvds any more. to compound the oddity of this situation, my brother has a laptop computer and it also has recently had the identical problem, but the two incedents are compleatly isolated and the players are mostlikely made by different companies.
has anyone ever heard of something like this before?
is there anything you can do to correct it or are these players just shot and need to be replaced?
thanks for your help

The laser may not be tracking well enough for the smaller pits on DVDs. This is how my first DVD player died. I never tried CDs in it to see if they still worked, that would have been an interesting study. I would've had to replace the laser assembly, but purchasing a new unit is typically more cost effective.

Invest in a DVD laser lens cleaner and run it.
Don't just blow air into the unit as that will not clean the laser lens.
You need to wipe the grime off by using a disc with little soft brush hairs on it.
The instructions on use are usually on the disc.
Not "Comfortably Broke" anymore just plain broke.

Years ago, I had a JVC CD player that stopped tracking after about three years. I had luck with opening the player and cleaning the lens with CD-cleaning fluid on a Q-tip. It needed doing about once a year.

I had a Plextor DVD+RW DL for my laptop. I had a similar issue after a year. My laptop saw the DVD drive and the DVD would spin up but I couldn't play it or see it on the desktop. The drive would spin and fuction normally but then stop. I replaced the drive with the same model and the same thing happened after a few weeks. My problem was with the drive but you probably just need to use a lens cleaner. Good luck.
