Are prerecorded movies in DVD-R or DVD+R? Or...something else?

Something else; they're not burned like recordables are.

Hmmm...So the fact that they are stamped instead of being burned...makes the question without meaning? It would seem that stamped or burned, there has to be a format of some kind. Or maybe there is a third format for stamping. Does that mean the player has to read 3 formats?

An excerpt:

"Although fans of the DVD+R format hate to hear this, the DVD+R format is a rogue format, invented by greedy companies that were unwilling to pay royalties to the DVD Forum in order to use and develop the DVD-R format and/or use the DVD logo. The DVD+R format does not carry the DVD logo because it is not an official DVD format."

The "format" on any type of DVD movie, regardless of stamped/+R/-R/whatever is the same. It's a pattern of 0s and 1s that when read and decoded can be played as a movie through your TV. MPEG-something.

What differs is how the 0s and 1s are greated on the disk. The goal is to make the 0s enough different from the 1s so that the DVD player laser can "see" the difference.

At least that's the way I understand it all.

I'm sometimes wrong, so do your own research too.

MPEG is the software format. The reason some players can/cannot handle all these formats is the physical properties of the recorded/stamped layer. The player has to be able to read the disc before the software becomes an issue. Mfgr-ed discs are much easier to read and work in all players. Burned discs are not quite the same and need different wavelengths in the laser, I believe.
