I just received my CX985v in the mail and was happy with it until I started to notice a periodic image flash(best way I can describe it) in between scene/camera angle changes. Upon looking closer, I began to notice that the video image/motion is choppy every so often like it's only displaying half the series of images it should to make a fluid picture. I've only seen a couple of people on the net that have noticed this sort of thing on a different entry level sony player. This is on original store bought DVDs. The Sony 5 disc changer this one was to replace doesn't do this at all. My guess is that it's because it's such an inexpensive unit(entry level) and that the more expensive one wouldn't likely do this.

I am now considering the DVP-CX777ES which is more expensive and is supposed to have better video quality. I was curious if anyone else has seen what I'm describing on either player. I don't mind spending the extra $$ on the CX777ES, but I don't want to have it delivered in only to find it does the same thing.

Any personal experience? Any thoughts? Do you think the CX777ES would do better?

Luckily the place I bought the CX985V will provide a full refund. But, they don't offer the CX777ES, and the other online merchants that sell this unit, have stiff return policies. So going to the CX777ES is a little more risky.

Any sugguestions on where's a good place to go to get one?

I like the Sonys because I've found them to play my DVD-Rs back flawlessly.

Thanks.

Raymond

I got my DVP-CX 777es from Oade Bros. online about a month ago and have been happy with it. I have not seen what you describe. They are an authorized Sony Dealer. You can probably find it cheaper at eCost or others, but I was willing to pay a little more in case I had problems and had to use the warranty.

Thanks!

I've done some additional research and it sounds like the CX985V has a known problem with playing Star Trek TNG DVDs. (probably some others too, but all my other players play them fine)

If anyone owns a set of TNG DVDs and has played them on the CX777ES, please let me know if you've seen what I've described on that player. I'm considering getting this more expensive model.

Thanks.

I'm still trying to find out if the 777 has the Chroma Oversampling bug. The 875 does, and that's my main complaint with it.

Does anyone know?

Guaranteed. It's a Sony. Sony's official word on the matter is: That doesn't exist, you're nuts.

Thanks Spiky! You're the first person in over a year to offer an answer to that question!

Try this, they have deeper details on chroma than Yes or No, although they haven't done megachangers:

Update: I got the CX777ES in and it does the same thing only not as bad. I will say that the video and audio quality are significantly better than what I remember the CX985V produced. The blacks are much more defined.

I just tested the Kenwood Sovereigns at the store yesterday, and they play them back fine. I guess I will have to go with a Kenwood. :P

I've just confirmed the new DVP-CX995V seems to play the Star Trek DVDs fine, with none of the studdering the 985 and 777ES had.

Just wanted to pass this on.
