Hello,

can anyone recommend a DVD recorder that will allow recordings to be saved from the hard drive and burned onto dvd ? also I am after a freeview box, can you get a combined model that will do both jobs ? thanks for any help,

Panasonic do several models of recorder that also incorporate a HDD. Check out [Link: avland.co.uk] for further information.

There are now also several Freeview units that incorporate twin tuners and a HDD; eg: Pace Twin, Fusion and latterly Panasonic. Check out http://www.pvruk.co.uk/ for further information.

Between this lot I'm sure you should be able to conjure a combination that will do what you want.

Many thanks for your help, I am looking at a Humax 8000T at the moment, but the word is it is to be upgraded soon to a 80 GB HD with enhanced software to boot so I may wait until it hits the market before I take the plunge,

For someone that is not too bothered to keep recordings or burn them to disc and who also needs a STB it looks a decent option.

One thing you ought to be aware of is that the 8000T has only one tuner - the reason for its being so cheap. The 9000T (available around Christmas . . . perhaps) is the twin tuner version.

As for disc storage capacity I'm a little at a loss to know what people record/store - or perhaps they're just too lazy to delete things. I use a Pace Twin and even with it's tiny(?) 20Gb HDD I've never filled the thing, but then I do regularly clear unwanted items.

Thanks for that, does the one tuner make much of a diff, what does that mean to me I don't go in for all the surround sound stuff as I'm not a Tele-Video-Film techie just a normal 28 widescreen is all I have, but also like you I like to keep stuff free from junk so I would get rid of stuff when it's been seen.

A single tuner means you have to watch what you're recording, unless of course it's an EPG recording (you're not there) or you record the digital channel and watch an analogue one. Obviously with twin tuner versions there's no problem. Note as well that you can record and watch a previous recording at the same time - or at least you can with the Pace.

According to the link you gave me pvruk, the new Humax has the EPG technology.......what that is I don't know but it seems to be an add-on to the previous model, I cannot see myself watching one programme and recording another at the same time but sod's law dictates otherwise, if fact it happened on Wednesday I wanted to watch Alan Titchmarsh and the evolution of the British Isles, on the other side was a prog about Mediums...both these things I would have liked to have taped but my Grundig has hit the skip, so no VCR anymore consequently I lost one of them and viewed the other.

This is what has given me the impetus to sort something out, your help has been a great to have, I can afford to wait a little longer for the right gear and you say that the Humax 9000T is around the corner so that could well be just the job,

EPG = Electronic Programme Guide

Initially the Freeview EPG was very basic, limited to now or next; i.e. you could only select for recording the programme on now or the one after. Now however, after several software upgrades, we have a full week to choose from.

As for the 9000T being around the corner I wouldn't hold your breath; the corner could be several blocks away (we've been waiting a loooooonnnnngggg time for this one). It might be worth investigating the Panasonic TUCTH100 a little more.

Once again thanks for that, I phoned up Humax, you are right again the 9000T is due out half way through next year but the revamped 8000T is out mid Oct.
Another little problem if you can help out again lol ! I am now in the market for a VCR combined with a DVD is this something you have any knowledge about ? not long back my VCR started to eat my tapes or more importantly my boys tapes normally this would not be a great problem but my son has Aspergers syndrome (A form of Autism) and he strated to scream the house down knowing some of his vid's are damaged (he likes everything to be perfect) so because I only have room for 2 items in my telly stand one being the Humax and another being the DVD/VCR I am trying to keep us all happy by keeping down on the hardware, do you know of a good combination ? just though I would ask, hope you don't mind,

As for Humax and Panasonic, you don't mention which model Humax. Regardlesss of the price though I, personally, would always pick a twin tuner model. Indeed, given that Pace might be abandoning Freeview (I've got a Pace Twin) I too have been looking at the Panasonic. Humax are taking far too long bringing the 9000T to the market.
