I've bought several blank DVD+RW discs (hp, Philips, Verbatim) with 4.7GB. In all of those I could record up to 8 hours. But with Memorex the cover stated "120min." I asked the salesperson if that is the limit--2 hours--and was told "Yes." This seems odd to me. Is the limit only 2 hours on some 4.7GB blank discs?

It depends on recording quality level. You are obviously using a much lower quality level to get 8 hours.

Two hours of the highest resolution setting is what fits on a 4.7GB DVD-R/RW disk. As the resolution settings go down, you can fit 4-6-8 hours of recordings, but I would stay away from the 8 hours recording, the picture quality is inferior. Two and four hours give you best results.
