Hi,

I am fairly new to all this, so please excuse me if I sound like Forest Gump on a bad day. I recently bought an out-of-the-box Philips DVD710 for £15 (multi-region fixed). It didn't come with a remote control and I therefore purchased a Philips universal SBC RU 252 remote control.

Now, the remote control works ok but my TV is an old 4:3 job and the DVD defaults to widescreen (I think) which makes the image compressed horizontally (people look about 12 feet tall and thinner than Kate Moss). There is no button I can find to get to the DVD setup menu so as that I can change this option. I can get to the DVD disc menus ok, by pressing the menu button but nothing else.

What I want to know is; is there any way in which I can access the setup menu to alter the aspect ratio? And if not, would a One For All signature 'three in one' URC 7030 allow me to do this as I can exchange the RC that I have for this with no problems?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Matt

Matt, many players have additional setup menus that can only be accessed when there is no disc in the player. Check it out and let us know.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried it but haven't had any luck. There may be some combination to press but I really have no idea. I was wondering if there was some 'standard' aspect ratio button on the One For All remote, because that would probably solve the problem (again I'm not sure).

Anyway, cheers.

When you took the disc out, did you press menu? Or I believe some Philips DVD players access the menu via a OSD button.

Yep - I pressed the only menu button (and every other button) on the Universal remote. The original remote apparently has a button marked 'setup' on it and this is the one I want. But there is no equivalent on the one I have.

I bought the Philips Universal because I thought they at least have made it to be compatible with their own DVD players.

If you get a hold of a one-for-all remote that accepts advanced codes, I've never heard of the 7030, these codes here may help.

Just for reference:

There are separate buttons for disc menu and setup menu on my Philips 726 player's remote. My OFA 6131 universal does not have the setup menu button in the built-in code. I haven't bothered programming with jp1 or advanced codes yet, but I'm sure there is such a code readily available.

However, a 3-in-one OFA remote may not be able to do either jp1 or advanced codes. I'd recommend a better OFA remote.

Great, thanks for all your help. I bought a OFA 6 urc7562 and now everything works beautifully. Plus I'm not going to have to buy another remote for quite a few years :)

Good stuff. Thanks again.
