Ok..i have a Sony HT-1700 which is a DVD player and reciever and stuff. i have the sony dvd player hooked to the reciever via digital coaxial from player to reciever and then component from player to Sony TV. Thus I have to switch TV to input 4 (DVD) and turn reciever to DVD/LD option.
Now, I want to hook up another Philips DVD player to the reciever. The reciever's DVD/LD vid in and aud in composite are free on any hook ups. Can I simply hook up the 2nd player to the reciever's connection here and still use the DVD/LD option? But then I think what will the TV input be on, there will be no connection from the 2nd player to the TV will there? This is so confusing. Can anyone help?? I would so appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this is right but this is how I conected my set up. (and it works) I have a panasonic vcr, dvd burner/player, 5 disc dvd player, av reciever, and a directv reciever conected to a hitachi big screen. The only thing I ran through the reciever was the sound. Ran pic cables direct to tv inputs. Except for sat reciever had to run it through burner so I could record. Hope this helps let me know--cope--

There are lots of options for hooking things up. I happen to have a VCR and a DVDp plugged into the same input on my receiver. My TV doesn't have that many inputs, so I switch with the receiver.

Since the VCR needs red/white/yellow and the DVD needs Svideo and digital audio, I can connect both to the same input with the different types of connections. Digital audio and Svideo are always automatically chosen first, so I can play a DVD anytime. I need to turn off the DVDp to play a tape.

If you can figure out the details of your receiver, you could perhaps find a similar combination solution. It might be better to combine the 2nd DVDp with something like a VCR, though--something disimilar so you can use different connections.

so you are saying something like if i have a game system hooked up to input 2 of tv via S-video (which leaves composite video open) and hook up 2nd player to composite video in of tv and then optical audio on reciever all i would have to do is make sure to switch tv input to 2 (while game sys off of course)and reciever to the DVD/LD option (which is already hooked to 1st DVD player except via coax digital audio, but as long as 1st player is off then no problem) am i getting warm..spkiy? thanks again for this help.

Well, it sounds as though you don't have enough digital inputs to cover all this. So that may not be an option for you. My receiver has several digital inputs and they are all assignable. They're just labeled 1, 2, 3, etc., not DVD/LD like yours.

And on TVs, using both composite and Svideo doesn't usually work. It works on receivers, but not TVs. The Svideo will cut off the composite on every TV I've checked.

Maybe you should just look at a switch that will do everything since you have a small, all-in-one type receiver. That's what I do outside of my big system with the big receiver.

They aren't as cheap as the one I listed in the other thread, but it's still far cheaper than a new receiver. There are models that take more inputs, too. This one is kinda small.
