It's coming. I promise. I spoke with a Starbucks manager who says they will have a DVD renting machine very soon.
Come in for your coffee, rent a movie.
Come back to return your movie, buy more coffee.
HMMM. Smart or over the top?

Anything that starts with "Starbucks" is over the top. And people clamor to it like lemmings. Which makes it smart, I guess.

There are only two places I have ever seen a "Starbucks", at airports and at bookstores. I can't imagine that this particular chain would have more than a niche market.

It will fit nicely between the Hotdog-on-a-bun and the Hot Tombstone pizza dispensers.

In Jacksonville, FL there are about 10 free standing Starbuck's which are always packed. Think go out for coffee on a date and pickup a movie too. Convenient?

"Pickup" indeed. This could start a trend as a high-tech singles scene. Imagine approaching a woman perusing the DVD choices:

"Hey, baby, have you seen this one in a real home theater? 100" picture and six channels?"

Or:

"You haven't really seen a movie until you've seen it on a ceiling-mounted plasma over a water bed!"

Sounds good to me, but it is to bad I hate Starbucks.

I worked in a convenience store when I was a kid back in '88 that had a video cassette vending maching for rentals. It's nothing new...I just don't think it ever took off...

Late last night I saw a commercial for a get-in-on-the-ground-floor business opportunity to become a DVD-vending-machine operator. Big investment required, no doubt.

Well, the packaging of most DVDs would certainly lend itself to being dispensed from a machine. I'd miss being able to pick up the case to read the details on the back cover, though.

What happens when the disc you rent looks like it's been run over by a marauding belt sander? Does the girl behind the counter point to the sign tht says "Management not responsible for money lost..."

And there's no need for an expensive subwoofer or tactile tranducer from Guitammer or Clarke-synthesis, one of the bed shakers from the local Days Inn will do just fine.

dvd vending machines are all over europe. and us americans, being about 2 years behind as far as technology goes, may jump on the bandwagon but... who knows... i believe they we will. but time will tell.

the only thing that is a real competitor is web downloadable video, but even with compression and a t1 line.. it takes me 6 hours to download 700mbs!... so... if i feel like a movie, instant gratification is 6 hours away, or a 15 min drive away - and then a 15 min dvd return away, OR maybe these things will catch on...

what other dvd delivery mechanisms are there?

I am starting a dvd vending maching leasing business and and insights would be great for my business strategies... thanks.. robert kim

You need to get out more. Or maybe the land of all things fifty caliber doesn't appeal to the management of Charbucks.

For reference, the penetration of Charbucks locations is so great that a crowd laughed when a comic talked about seeing a Starbucks located in a Starbucks. I was in the Starbucks in the South Pasadena Wells Fargo bank when I heard that joke.

In my corner of the world, the left coast, Starbucks is everywhere.

You do have one point, though; how many caffeinated preppies or DINKs who zip through Starbucks are going to stop long enough to shop for a movie, knowing they will then have to plan to come back to Starbucks to return it? It just does not seem like a DVD vending machine would appeal to the Startbucks crowd. The Starbucks Generation, let's say.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie, don't know about that, you are assuming they need to go back for the movie. I think many people are addicted to their coffee joint. As an example, the building i am working in has coffee machines on every floor, but in the lobby there is some stores and a coffee/restaurant shop. we are running out of place and some of us will move to a building across the street. I was talking to someone the other day about the move, and she was annoyed with it and here biggest problem was that now she would not be able to get her coffee without going outside the building
