I have tried the discrete power commands and they work but when it powers on it opens the disc tray.
Is there a discrete Power On command that does not open the tray?
I looked for a setting in the Sony menu and did not see anything that would turn that feature off. Did I miss something?
If I use the toggle power it does not open the tray when it powers on.

"Play" has worked as a turn-on command on all Sony disc players that I have worked with.

If multiple power on codes are available for Sony BD devices, have you tried them all? I think "eject" also often works as a power on, which MAY be what you're actually using here (to test, if sending it opens the tray while its already on, I'd suspect it's "eject", but if it doesn't, and it only does anything when it's off, then I'd say it's an operational quirk of that unit - make sure you have the latest firmware).
