My client got a quote from Crutchfield for a 16 channel amp and eight Belkin airplay units. Has anyone used eight of these in one system, and can say whether this will actually work reliably?

How are they going to stream to these- is it for using one or two zones at a time?

I think it's time to ask more questions.

The best BT receiver I have found is from Miccus- the sound was better than I had expected and the range was amazing. It can be used as a transmitter or receiver and they state that if a pair is used, the range is around 300'. If it performs as a pair as well as the single ones have, that should be accurate- I was over 150' away with my iPhone when I tested the first one I installed and it never dropped out. Miccus have analog and optical IN/OUT, too.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

I have no experience with these gadgets. The Belkin's are WiFi Airplay devices with NFC setup.

I think that, at some point, playing multiple rooms from a single phone/pad would tax the phone/pad processing power or WiFi connectivity.

Why would you bring up using Bluetooth, when we are talking about WiFi devices on a network? Or do you not know what AirPlay is?
The Belkin Soundform Connect is an AirPlay 2 device. AirPlay 2 allows you to group zones together.

Tom, this setup should work just fine for the customer. I'm sure Crutchfield already explained the limitations but you should go over it again with them as well. They can only stream what is available on the device they are AirPlay'n from and if that device gets interrupted, so does the audio. Also, volume control is going to be from the mobile device. So if someone connects at full volume, then....
I would be very conservative on the gain settings for the amp.
Hard to argue with less than a 1/4 of the price of using a SONOS Port. But certainly there are also tangible benefits for the SONOS upgrade.

The only gotcha I read is = some people say the NFC setup to crap/doesn't work. You might have to manually connect each one using the 8 digit code on the back.

What is their level or technical ability? What are they trying to accomplish?

I assume we are dealing with an old refit situation where the house has 8 rooms of speakers in place already and they are trying to make them work as cheaply as possible?

Sure, It will work. but what are the expectations?

Perhaps one of the oddest things is that they have used Sonos and found it too difficult. They now use airplay in a couple rooms and are very comfortable with it.

There is class of users who think that anything Apple offers is "easy" and everything else is "hard".

While I need to use an iPad for certain work related functions and I'll encounter Mac's at customer sites, I'd rather not deal with anything Apple. Apple is so "easy" they don't feel the need for accessible documentation and this drives me crazy.

I'm not familiar with the Belkin product. It seems like there are going to be allot of if-then limitations... Especially to eight zones/belkin players.

A quick look a the Belkin website has this which makes me think that it may not be all that easy...

"Connect with the Belkin SOUNDFORM App
With our Belkin SOUNDFORM app for iOS and Mac devices, you can enjoy and control music in multiple rooms. It lets you tune sound, adjust latency, and sync all your AirPlay-enabled speakers automatically or manually."

If the Sonos app was too difficult, the Belkin app may be an issue also.
I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

The Belkin app is to setup the system. Once it is on the customer's network, they will be AirPlay'n to the devices - something the customer said they do now and are comfortable with.
NO one is going to be using the Belkin app after the devices are installed.
