Client has used it for at least 15 years to access his home based Comcast box. Not the same as SlingTV BTW.
His work sent him around the world and he could retrieve his DVR programming and watch live TV as if he were home.
SlingBox reportedly shut down their servers November 9th.
With all the streaming options now, I can’t imagine a SlingBox imitation could exist and thrive.
I am not sure how YouTubeTV would work while traveling, as it is location dependent. Maybe could be effective but twitchy traveling the U.S., but doubtful out of the country.
Anyone been down this road? TIA.

I am a YouTubeTV user and live on Long Island, NY. I have recently traveled to Massachusetts and Vermont and carry a Firestick from my bedroom tv to keep things simple. All locations have different local channels. It has worked as though I am home, same local channels, same DVR function, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime. I cannot speak to international though.

What if you set to record games at home and watch on a slight delay when traveling? There are all kinds of combinations, but most don''t work. For games recorded in your original local area you get a message that you can't watch the recording. You really need the NFL Ticket/app to get all the games. It seems like MNF and sunday night football is handled different also. I don't remember all the error messages and combinations. You an usually watch the games a day later though. I assume it's to prevent bars from playing the out of region games or blacked out games.

This is one area that is very challenging with customers. I can't speak for recordings of live TV and whether you can watch that remotely or not. If you can record a football game locally and record it, why couldn't you watch it later from anywhere?
I will say that internationally it's much more difficult. Netflix and other services doesn't work internationally. We did a house in Costa Rica and had to install a completely separate network that has a dedicated VPN connection back to the US to allow any of their streaming apps to work in a foreign country. Only the streaming devices that are used by the homeowner are connected to this separate connection.

It's the way the NFL contracts are written, at least right now. I think a big one is coming up that might change things but the NFL has/uses some really good contract lawyers that's for sure.

Have a client who just asked us the same question. I see the Tivo Edge boxes, and they appear to offer Slingbox-like capability. Anyone using these?

I don't know how this conversation turned to NFL. The original post didn't mention NFL at all. That being said, I can check to see if NFL recordings on broadcast OTA tv will allow you to watch recorded video on a delay. I have a antenna feeding into an AirTV which I can use to watch the OTA stations within the SlingTV App (not Slingbox, SlingTV). The AirTV has a SD card slot to allow you to insert an SD card for DVR storage. I can watch recorded content anywhere in the SlingTV App, or on a Roku (can throw a Roku Stick in a hotel TV perhaps, providing their wifi doesn't suck like most).
For non sports content, don't just about all major cable and sat carriers now have an app you can watch off site? I know the local cable companies here and Dish Network do.

It was this part in the OP's original post, the youtubetv part: "I am not sure how YouTubeTV would work while traveling, as it is location dependent. Maybe could be effective but twitchy traveling the U.S., but doubtful out of the country."

I have a client that is in the same boat....
Anyone with more network knowledge then me....I wonder if there would be some way to use JAP as a P2P via a VPN. Force it to 720P so there isn't much bandwidth.
I understand this wouldn't be an option for sitting in an airport, and would require you to run around with JAP and a VPN tunnel device, but in the case of my client with his European homes, I wonder if this could work? Then just use the control4 App to remotely control the cable box.
