The team who might help you are in a meeting right now, dammit.

To get to them normally, go to [Link: usa.yamaha.com].
Scroll down to CONTACT US. Click on it. Choose Product and Order Chat. Click that you're over 18 years of age. LIVE CHAT appears.

When you think you're done filling that out, watch out for a pretty dumb gotcha! that they have built into the chat window. When it looks like you're finished doing everything except SUBMIT, notice at the right edge of the chat window, a nearly imperceptible cursor line.... you have to scroll to make that line go up; another edit window appears. You are to write what your issue is; then you can hit SUBMIT.

It's possible that those last couple of steps are not required on your computer, and that the aspect ratio of my monitor hides that last window.

These guys are pretty great. It's an incredible piss-off that they are EVER ALL unavailable during business hours, but hey, it's business. Best of luck.

Ernie

PS I think these guys can arrange to have an exhaustive (i.e. 200 or so page) manual of the receiver printed up and sent to you. For free. I did for my RX-A880.

Best of luck, especially since they are closed right now.

Ernie
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

No.

Since I cannot see any video coming from the unit, I can’t navigate it’s menus.

Ernie, previous models used the “straight” and “power” buttons. This model has no “straight” button on the front.

Unplugging for a couple minutes brought it back.

In case I meet one of these units soon, what sort of issue were you reacting to? I hope that they have a yet to be published button sequence to reset a unit when not attached to a display.

Sometimes the local rep can help for this sort of detail.

No video or audio.

You have to have some sort of external button presses for when there is no video display that will allow you to navigate through the menus.

The only two buttons on the front of the unit is Power and the select button that is part of the input select/menu knob. I tried that but no luck.

Thanks for jumping in there to help, by the way! I didn’t want to pull the unit from service.

I spent a few minutes reading nearby pages. One should start at Page 281, then one should be able to use the selector knob. There are some options that could result in customer calls, such as the Volume Knob Lock and Input Selector Lock.

Inquiring minds want to know what happens if the Input Selector Lock disables the Selector knob, does this completely disable using the knob and the ability to reverse this setting? If so, there must be another, secret reset procedure.

I wonder if you were having some sort of EDID spat and the reboot worked through that.

I did not want to spend all day there, but the Yamaha website with the owners manual had a table of contents, and I could only click on topics in the table of contents. I could not actually thumb through the manual page by page. You must’ve had a different web location, because I could not find what you located.

Press the touch sensitive menu button on the front panel.
Then use the small dial above it to cycle through to settings, then use that to find Initialize... follw your nose from there.
Piece of cake.

If the product is on the network, you can always dial into the IP address and add '/setup' onto the end of that in a web browser.
This allows you to not only reset the unit, but also back it up prior to the reset.

If it's not on the network to begin with, press the MusicCast app and the touch sensitive 'Connect' button, also located on the front right hand side of the AVR itself.

Also - here's a link...

[Link: cdn.shopify.com]

You could also do a soft reset (holding down the main power button for 10 seconds).

No video or audio.

I now doubly, even triply, feel your pain, especially since you don't have a display with you. Never do that again!

My setup, a DirecTV DVR and Apple TV feeding an RX-A880 feeding a 65" LG, gave me problems that the service place where Yamaha sends their stuff could not figure out.

Turned out that if the Apple TV were turned on less than about a minute before switching to it, the TV's deep color got turned on. This resulted in a completely confused outputting of video and audio from the Yamaha. To be more succinct:
Apple TV turned on a bit too early
TV's Deep color gets turned on
Yamaha's outputs get scrambled.

Tom, did you ever get your problem handled?

Why is a display necessary (other than for testing the video output, which could be done with the homeowner's TV)? I thought the AVR's LED display shows 'Init- Cancel' or something similar.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

When Tom says he doesn't have a display, he's including the customer's TV.

The combination of components that I have did not properly output either the video signal or the audio signal when it "thought" I wanted deep color on. Setting up the system properly, indeed setting it up AT ALL, required a video display to prove that it was set up correctly. (When the deep color problem occurred, the receiver's front panel display gave no indication that anything was amiss.)
