Anyone know a technical reason why Cox says you need Docsis 3.1 to upgrade from 300 Mbps to 500 Mbps?

They say this frequently even though the Docsis 3.0 spec states 1 Gbps down and the Arris 3.0 modems we've put in spec 1.4 Gbps.

I know they want to rent modems but I'm curious if there's something I'm not aware of.

Thanks in advance

They can get more speed from a narrower frequency band with 3.1 vs. 3.0
This is why cable companies are upgrading to the 3.1 standard.
It isn't about the fact that 3.0 is capable of those speeds, it is about getting those speeds within the bandwidth the cable company has to work with on their system. 3.1 allows them to do more than 3.0 can.

I have only spec'd 3.1 modems for my customers for awhile now. Xfinity has started offering gigabit service in my area now and 3.1 is required. So my customers are already ready for it, at least the ones I've installed within the last year. They won't have to buy a new modem.

Honestly if you are selling cable modems to customers, you should have been selling them DOCSIS 3.1 for a long time now (at least the last year or two). They are backward compatible to 3.0 and everyone has known for a long time now (many years) that 3.1 was going to be required at some point.
Shame on those who haven't.

I'm currently using ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 modem, available on Amazon for $149.

We've been using 3.1 since they first became available. I stalled a few customers to wait for 3.1 as I could see the writing on the wall.

But will this have any effect when Spectrum over promises?

Spectrum advertises 100 mbps, and 300 mbls, but no one in this area gets over 60 to 70 mbps depending on the time of day.

9:15 pm I got 69.03 mbps and that's the highest I've seen in a long time.

Thanks for this. That's our go-to modem as well. We've had 6190s (they were 3.0) that have been in the field for awhile that Cox keeps trying to rip out and that's what got me thinking about this.

Is that WiFi speed? Need to use the 5Gb band, not 2.4Gb. Do a wired speed test, after power cycling the equipment.

My plan is for 200Mbps and I just did a test- came in at 222+ up/12 down with straight lines. The cable feeding my house was replaced in about 2007, after a tree took it down.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

That's hard wire speeds.

We’ve offered CM1000’s for the past year, only recently we stock “Nighthawk” models with telephony as the triple play package holds the most value for clients.
