1. Easy UI for local and remote access to recorded footage (mainly from iOS or Mac devices)
2. Ability to "tag" motion events from 3rd party IP cameras (that last part is key)

Details:

Existing cameras are a single wirepath IP outdoor dome, and an analog "eyeball" camera at the front door that is being fed through an Axis IP encoder. So 2 channels now, possibility to add 2-4 additional cameras in the future.

Existing NVR solution is a Synology NAS with their Surveillance Station software on it. I thought it worked great when we put it in 4 or 5 years ago. I was able to get the feeds to the C4 system easily enough, and the UI was good. I think they have updated that software quite considerably since then, and I am not sure his has been updated. He thinks it is too hard to access footage, etc. even though I think it may just need to be updated and given another chance because it checks all the boxes for what he wants an NVR to accomplish.

But I want another option to throw at him. Luma might be ok, but I am not sure off the top of my head, if it will give you analytics (motion events) from 3rd party cameras. I should RTFM. I have heard good things about Digital Watchdog, but have no experience with it and I generally do not like guinea pigging with my clients.

Any thoughts? I think the limiting factor is the analytics....it seems that most NVR manufacturers from our normal vendors only give you that capability if you use their cameras (this is definitely the case with Elan, and I think Luma as well).

I 'seems' like Blue Iris software might meet your requirements.

I'd suggest looking at replacing the cameras instead of the recorder. Hik cameras support all kinds of analytics at the camera and will work with Synology. Plus I like Surveillance station variation of scrolling timeline search for motion based events; it is the closest experience to a Ring or Nest that I have found so far.

Agreed. Not sure what he finds hard about accessing recordings. I mean you just select recordings and it comes up.

I agree. I think the issue is that he has not updated the surveillance software since we installed it 5 years ago. I do not even think they had a dedicated app back then so he is used to using the web browser interface which is probably archaic by today's standards.

I am going to go over and update the Synology and get him hooked up on the app and desktop software and show him what's new and I think he will likely stick with that solution. Cameras are fine for what he needs. His buddy talked him into the Synology and he works for WD and provided the hard drives so it's not a product we sold him. But I am hoping to start using it more.

Yup, update DSM and SS to the latest. Make sure you setup quickconnect. It’s Synology’s cloud server that enables access from anywhere and doesn’t require open ports.

Then on the app, setup local access using NAS IP and remote using quickconnect ID.

Solid solution and just finished a 32 camera job. Client has already had an incident and said it was extremely intuitive and fast to get to the footage he needed.

Are you guys sourcing Synology from Amazon or?...

Sounds like Synology will work for Mac based customers. Very nice.

Pretty much.
To be clear, Synology does have a partner program and reseller program. But... they do not cater to small business. Similar to companies like Sennheiser, Sony, and others, you can go factory direct if you are ordering tens of thousands of $ every quarter. Hundreds of thousands of $ a year.

B and H is where I go because it’s 1 day shipping to me as long as it’s in stock and they do fairly well with stock levels. Plus hard drives as well.

Client contacted me this morning after he updated the software on his NAS, got the new app connected and is thrilled with it so far. :Thumbs up:

I am going to try using the Synology stuff more often I think. It is much more powerful and user friendly than anything we can get from our normal vendors.

Hey looking at Synology for a mac customer.

Sounds like its still the best for a mac based system…

I haven’t had a chance to look but is there some kind of a driver for C4 on screen display via HDMI that works worth a damn?

If you can find a VS360HD, it has a HDMI output and shows exactly what layout is being used during live view from Surveillance Station.

Last I checked, Synology discontinued their viewer device. It was not cheap either. I have one job with a C4 driver to view the feeds from the Synology. I do not know if it is still available though. I cannot remember who wrote it either off the top of my head.
